Viduthalai Part 1" is a hard-hitting and visceral Tamil film that delves into the dark realities of police brutality and the fight for justice in a society riddled with inequality. While the film's raw intensity and unflinching portrayal of violence may not be for everyone, its powerful performances, stunning visuals, and thought-provoking narrative make it a compelling and unforgettable experience.
Vetrimaaran's direction is masterful, capturing the gritty realism of the setting and the emotional turmoil of the characters with a sense of urgency and authenticity. Soori delivers a breakout performance as Kumaresan, a young police constable caught in the crossfire between the authorities and a rebel group fighting for the oppressed. His portrayal of innocence, fear, and gradual disillusionment is both heartbreaking and captivating.
Vijay Sethupathi, though appearing in a limited role, makes a powerful impact as Perumal "Vaathiyar," the enigmatic leader of the rebel group. His presence adds a layer of mystery and intrigue to the narrative, leaving viewers eager to see his story unfold in the upcoming second part.
The film's action sequences are brutal and unflinching, highlighting the violence and injustice inflicted upon the marginalized communities. The cinematography is stunning, capturing the beauty and harshness of the landscape with equal measure. Ilaiyaraaja's music adds another layer of depth, with its haunting melodies and powerful themes enhancing the film's emotional impact.
While "Viduthalai Part 1" is undoubtedly a powerful and thought-provoking film, it does leave you wanting more. The narrative feels somewhat incomplete, with several plot threads left unresolved, and the pacing occasionally slows down, hindering the build-up of tension. However, these minor shortcomings are overshadowed by the film's raw intensity, exceptional performances, and unflinching portrayal of social injustice.

Viduthalai Part 2 Movie Review: Vetrimaaran Delivers A Noble But Generic Political Drama
- Kirubhakar Purushothaman
- Shreyanka Mazumdar
Viduthalai 2 suffers from something as basic as exposition. Characters keep telling you what’s happening with the story.
Viduthalai Part 2 A
Vetri Maaran’s Viduthalai Part 1, told from the perspective of a new police constable Kumaresan (Soori), posted in a rural hillside Tamil Nadu village, explored the story of an extremist organisation named Makkal Padai and its head Perumal Vaathiyar (Vijay Sethupathi). Makkal Padai has a history, but when we entered the world in the first part, the conflict was immediate as the terrorist organisation had just bombed a passenger train killing and injuring several lives. The premise answered both ‘why and why now’ of the film’s existence. It ended with the arrest of Vaathiyar, aided by Kumaresan, who is on the brink of getting disillusioned with the government’s propaganda against the organisation. The effective first part left us with many questions about Vaathiyar and how it will affect Kumaresan.
Naturally, the second part is supposed to finish the hero’s journey–in this case the journey of Kumaresan. It also has to provide an answer to the train blast, which was the starting point of the whole film. While Vetri Maaran resolves such issues, those are treated as afterthoughts. Instead, the film burdens itself with telling the life history of Vaathiyar and the origin of Makka Padai. On the other hand, Kumaresan is reduced to a supporting character. One can argue that he is the narrator of the film, but that is a flimsy excuse for this screenwriting disaster.
related stories
That’s the core problem of Viduthalai Part 2. In an attempt to make an epic of sorts about the rise of a leader, Vetrimaaran abandons precision and focus. From being a gripping story of a modest constable and his struggle to make sense of the treacherous politics surrounding him, Viduthalai Part 2 ends up becoming a generic sermon on leftist ideology. The film no longer concerns Kumaresan, his love interest, and his inner turmoil. Rather, it indulges in a predictable story of Perumal, a schoolteacher, who evolves into an extremist revolutionary.
Swipe Left For Next Video
Without a doubt, Vetri Maaran has his intentions in the right place. He makes a strong case for the uprising against caste-based discrimination, establishments, and exploitation of labour. Even as he tells the story of Vaathiyaar, he subtly puts forth how Dravidian and communist politics have liberated people from the grasp of casteist zamindars and capitalistic crooks. A significant time is spent on stressing the importance of unions, and a lot more is spent on verbose communist monologues that are hard-hitting and inspiring. However, in the context of the movie, it is excess as the narrative becomes all over the place. While a motive is essential for a story, it can’t be the story itself. Viduthalai 2 lingers too much on the set-up and motive behind the violence, and when the film finally resumes its present narrative, it doesn’t have much to say. It is gripping when it is focused on individual characters. For instance, the character arc of the officer-in-charge Ragavendar (Chetan) and his actions make the film far more gripping than the overarching narrative about Makkal Padai.
On top of that, Viduthalai 2 suffers from something as basic as exposition. Characters keep telling you what’s happening with the story. In the battleground, Vaathiyaar goes on and on about why he will not be killed if he gets arrested. Even there he doesn’t stop his sermon about the importance of ideologies. Amidst all the lines, there is this journey of Vaathiyaar–from police custody to escape and back to police custody. While he and the film travel a great length, the displacement of the screenplay is zero. The dense dialogues make it more contrived and didactic. In essence, Viduthalai Part 2 is Vetri Maaran constantly finding ways to tell you the uninspiring story, which he couldn’t show.

Viduthalai Part 1 Movie Review: Soori's standout performance is the highlight of this film
Viduthalai part 1 is directed by vetrimaaran and is a riveting cop drama set on the tamil nadu-karnataka border. soori has delivered a stellar performance, says our review..
Listen to Story
- Soori essays the protagonist in the film.
- Vijay Sethupathi stars as Perumal.
- Viduthalai Part 1 released on March 31.
Release Date: 31 Mar, 2023
Vetrimaaran is an award-winning director and everyone knows that when he decides to make a film, they can expect something unique and engaging. With Viduthalai, the director has split it into parts and Viduthalai Part 1 was released on March 31. This movie has been adapted from the short story titled Thunaivan written by B Jeyamohan, and both Jeyamohan and Vetrimaaran worked on the screenplay together.
Kumaresan (Soori) is a police constable and he is sent to a police camp based in a village near the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border. A police camp, headed by Ragavendar (Chethan), has been established there in order to catch the key leaders of a terrorist outfit called Makkal Padai (People's Army) headed by someone named Vaathiar aka Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi).
Makkal Padai had been fighting police brutality for many years and their latest act was to detonate bombs on a train bridge which killed 25 and injured many. Now, politicians have inked a deal with foreign companies for mining in the forest area and the Makkal Padai has taken this up as their latest cause. Since Ragavendar doesn't succeed, in comes senior cop Sunil Menon (Gautham Vasudev Menon) as the head of Operation Ghosthunt.
Kumaresan recounts the story of what happened in letters to his mother and that's how we learn of what transpires. He joins the E company as a jeep driver and his duty is to deliver food to all the police who are based in the checkposts in the forest. When he helps a village woman to a hospital, Kumaresan is severely punished by Ragavendar and he learns there is a nexus between the villagers and the Makkal Padai. He refuses to apologise to Ragavendar and that's how we learn how strong he is when it comes to his principles and beliefs. It is at this time he also meets Paapa (Bhavani Sre) and an unexpected romance ensues.
Do the police catch Perumal and his men? How does constable Kuamresan fit into this whole police hunt for Vaathiar? Who is Paapa?
At the outset, one may think this movie is a police drama like Vetrimaaran's earlier film Visaranai and it is not. It is a completely different story in a different setting. Like Visaranai, Viduthalai also shows police brutality and cops being 'bad' but for very different reasons.
The way the director has narrated the story, it seems to be simple - good men versus bad men, but there are so many layers that unfold as the film progresses - politicians and corporate relationships, how politicians shape social narratives, cops and their brutal behaviour, caste politics, a seemingly untenable romance. The beauty of the film lies in these layers and there are some scenes that flow so naturally that you realise its importance, like the actor on screen, much later.
Vetrimaaran's ability to weave a gripping narrative is well-known, but his choice of Soori as the lead would have surprised many. The main highlight of this film is Soori, as he has delivered a stellar performance as Kumaresan. It is his face that is clearly etched in your mind long after you leave the theatre.
How Kumaresan and thereby Soori mature through the film is a compelling watch and you applaud the character as well as the actor. Soori carries this film on his shoulders not just with his acting but his voiceovers as well. Bhavani Sre must also be appreciated for her good work as Paapa and Chethan as well. Ilaiyaraaja's background music was apt for the film, but his songs could have been better. Velraj's cinematography was a great asset to Viduthalai.
Viduthalai (Freedom) is a film that is a must-watch because it offers a new cinematic perspective of Vetrimaaran and especially because Soori is outstanding.

Exclusive Report --> Review | Viduthalai Part 2: When bullets silence voice of oppressed

The Tamil movie Viduthalai Part 2, directed by Vetrimaaran unveils the conundrum that links the unprivileged, the law and powers that be. Based on writer Jeyamohan's short story 'Thunaivan', the movie portrays the struggles, desperation, pain and injustice the oppressed section of society undergoes. Soori, Vijay Sethupathi, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Manju Warrier, Rajiv Menon, Ilavarasu and Kishore play prominent roles in the movie.
The storyline follows the dilemma of a simple, virtuous police constable, Kumaresan, from a rural hamlet who opposes the unjust actions and stance of the authority he serves.
When Perumal Vaathiyar, a hard-line leader of the marginalised section, is being chased, Kumaresan is compelled to perform his duty even though he sympathises with the former's ideology. The story keenly follows the atrocities meted out to the oppressed, their vehement fight and indomitable spirit to win their rights. It also shows how their desperate fight is subdued and guns silence their voices.
While Viduthalai Part 1 was the story of Kumaresan, played by Soori, Part 2 is invariably the story of Vaathiyaar, played by Vijay Sethupathy. Soori's expression of rustic innocence and vehement emotions are realistic.
While Vijay Sethupathi gets under the character's skin throughout, Manju Warrier as Mahalakshi oozes subtlety. There are moments she chokes you with deep feelings, but nothing much has been written for her in the script. Rajiv Menon, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Kishore enact their characters with brilliance and verve. Anurag Kashyap appears in a cameo but in a powerful role.
There is a symbolic representation of how people gel together for a common cause and how people obsessed with power dynamics engage in acts that leave them asunder. In this regard, the misadventures of a senior police officer in the final sequences are both a revelation and a dramatic plot device.
The technical brilliance, too, is noteworthy. The camera by R Velraj absorbs the warmth and hue of people's emotions and actions; Ilaiyaraaja's musical strain flows and ebbs like entrancing leitmotifs; the costumes, make-up, and even the meticulous edits keep the flow of the narrative forceful.
The dialogues, too, make the narrative powerful, and some one-liners are uttered like dictums, for example, the one regarding Mahalakshmi's short hair. The romance of Perumal and Mahalakshmi runs with a subdued pace but sweetly laces the narrative and adds charm to the engaging watch.
However, the monotony of the narration and the erratic dubbing and sound mixing mar the beauty of the film. It feels that the makers failed to apply dexterity in the sound department and let the dialogues, narration, and songs run like an incessant rain without a gap, making it difficult to follow the story at times.
This makes the first half tiresomely dragging. However, the movie rebounds with an intriguing plot twist in the second half. Whether it is the slow trek along the bushy tracts of the high range, reflections on Perumal's past or the stunning disclosures, the narrative flows with engaging ease.
The war in the Satyamangalm forest might rattle your senses. But the concluding sequences are stupendously engaging, and the climax with suspense precariously perched on a cliff top packs you off with many things to feel, think and recall.
