Assignment 05
Introduction
An African as explained by dictionary, dictionary/browse/african, as “a native or inhabitant of Africa.” For me this is the complete and total opposite of an African. Being an African to me means that you were born from this soil on the Africa continent, your blood runs through this continent and there is no other place to call home than this continent. Our diverse cultures, oneness and togetherness can be found by all Africans. It is the slang we use, the languages we speak, our ways, means and norms. There is no person like an African person. I do not believe one will be an African if you did not practice Ubuntu and communal living, simply because that is the way we as Africans are taught from a very young age to always think about others, always respect one another and always think about others before one think about oneself. This in essence to me is Ubuntu and a standard way of practicing daily communal living.
I am very fortunate and blessed to have experienced Ubuntu in my life. When I was a little girl, my mother decided to take us on a vacation. As a newly divorced woman my mother tried her best to make our lives as exciting and fun as possible with the limited resources she had. We drove from Pretoria to Mbombela, singing songs and playing “eye spy with my little eye” when all of a sudden bang outside and the tyre of our vehicle burst. We pulled over to the side of the road and my mother got out to assess the damage. The tyre that burst was ripped apart and damaged the vehicle as well. My mother started unpacking our luggage from the boot of the car to get to the spare wheel and the tools to loosen the damaged wheel. She started with the
wheel spanner and was unable to turn it with her hands, she decided to stand on it and jump to loosen the wheel nut.
Just as she landed from her jump the wheel spanner pierced a hole through her shoe into her foot, injuring her. In those days there were no such things as a cellphone and we could not call someone to help. After sitting next to the road, for what seemed like forever, as the sun was setting another vehicle pulled over in front of our car. An old man exited the vehicle and saw we were in dire need, without any hesitation this man quickly assessed our situation and got a first aid bag from his car and gave it to my mother to disinfect and bandage her foot and started changing our wheel. Within minutes he was finished. As my mother thanked the man and got into our car, we noticed that he followed us to the first petrol station to make sure we were safe, after this he went on his way. We never knew this man and never asked his name but he assisted us when we had no other option.
I believe that Ubuntu stops being Ubuntu when a person has a persona and an alter ego to impress others and for one’s own personal gain. There is an amazing picture I once saw on social media of a man feeding a poor family and taking pictures and posting it to show others what he has done. To me Ubuntu is a way of living and doing something without expecting something in return. If you are in the position to assist someone, assist them, him or her. One should never skip an opportunity to do so.
It is of my opinion that Ubuntu can and should be practiced in every aspect of our lives, not only in communities. When we can assist someone in their daily struggle, we have made their lives simpler and easier for them. I think that Ubuntu should be implemented more in our law system. Rather than waiting for someone to be convicted of a crime we make assumptions and form our own opinions about the person, even though we do not have the facts. On the other hand, with victims, we should be united and stand with the victims and image what it would be like when this is something that happened to you. Be more respectful, mindful and united.
