WW1 outside of being a tremendous historical event and political event, for the time being, shook people's perception of what lengths countries would go to for global hegemony. One of these ways is through the great yet terrible technological innovations introduced into combat during WW1. For example, trench warfare's inception on the Western Front. There was added protection to trench warfare, as it eliminated the need for close quarters or hand-to-hand combat, but in exchange for the distance was time. This type of organization would lead to expansive, torturous, and miserable periods of the battle between allied and axis powers, months would pass at a time without any legitimate progress being made. To any nation willing to go to extreme lengths, (all of them), this is where chemical warfare was introduced. Colorful, either grotesque or pleasantly scented smoke would cloak an army, and poison its opposition. Destroying respiratory organs, causing blistering, and choking those to death who weren't prepared with masks in anticipation of the newest weapon. The implementation of gas warfare on battlegrounds would forever demand foresight from combatants, and push humanity's armies into the direction where chemical weaponry and possible counters to it had to be considered. Finally, the most directly horrific technology introduced to combat from then and going forward would be the machine gun. The machine gun was fully automatic, required little effort if ever to be reloaded, and could be fired until it was simply too hot to keep shooting. There is no outrunning the fire of a machine gun, there's only being caught or maimed. Maybe a soldier could escape being bayoneted by being in a trench, maybe they could have a mask to avoid toxic gases, or even escape rifle fire, but thus forth there'd rarely be surviving machine gun fire. Weaponry with a constant stream of bullets, directly fired, with high calibers, was simply unheard of yet extremely effective and would change modern warfare from then on out.
During WW1, women in a directly combative role were uncommon until much later in the war, towards the end. But those women who volunteered would take the position of aids; nurses, telephone operators, or clerical jobs. Effectively this meant that women would operate hospitals & canteens, transfer orders or communications, and organize & document information/events. Over 21,000 women joined Nurse Corps like The Red Cross and served overseas. Thirteen thousand more women filled clerical jobs as part of the Navy Active Reserves or Marine Corps. And two hundred women traveled to Europe to work as telephone operators in the Army Signal Corps. Women took a large part in terms of providing support, health, and aid to those in combative roles overseas.
To be a minority in World War 1, especially in the American military meant a few things for certain: segregation, alienation, and discrimination. Black, Asian, and Hispanic soldiers were separated into their separate divisions & camps, not to serve among any of their white counterparts. Of these, many Asian and Hispanic soldiers were sorted into speech programs, which for whatever discriminatory reason wasn't required of foreign white allies. But maybe the strangest
and most wasteful aspect of the minority experience during World War 1 was the relative absence from combat. Of 365,000 African-Americans drafted or volunteered, only about 40, saw combat, similar statistics applying to other racial minorities like Mexican-Americans or Native Americans. In the U. military, most of these men were assigned support roles rather than being allowed to participate in combat. These support roles ranged from digging ditches to transporting supplies. Although it can be seen as a gift, as minority soldiers wouldn't be expected to see warfare as often as their white counterparts, it's c slight considering these people were just as capable to participate. Support roles, although vital & important, didn't have to be all that minorities were relegated to and it begs the question of what would've been if more minorities were allowed to serve on the front lines. What would change militaristically, or even in the social climate between races?
