I asked my student, Hira, to do her homework. She finished doing her homework an hour ago. Now I'm going to check it. Source: self-made What is the coloured phrase grammatically? Is it a gerund or a participle?

lingobingo

That gerund (“doing her homework” being a noun clause acting as the object of the verb finished) is not even needed. But of course not everyone uses the term gerund.

lingobingo said: I’m saying that, in that sentence, the present participle doing is part of a phrase acting as a noun, so it can be described as a a gerund. But it’s not needed; it could be omitted altogether. Also, the repeat of “her homework” is unnecessary and would normally be replaced by a pronoun ( it ). I asked my student, Hira, to do her homework. She finished it an hour ago. Click to expand...

It's a noun phrase and it's a gerund phrase. A gerund phrase is a type of noun phrase.

Only a noun phrase can take a verb, as subject or object. In another construction, it would indeed be a noun clause – a non-finite participle clause. Doing her homework, she didn’t notice her father come in.

Can you share a source that explains their terminology? I’m curious.

@Kammy73 You're welcome. Also, there's an idiomatic meaning to "do one's homework": 2. To be thoroughly prepared and informed about something or something, especially in advance of some process, action, or decision. Be sure you do your homework before heading into that meeting; there's a lot at stake, and no one's going to like it if you aren't up to speed. I always do my homework before I make big purchases.
