Cultural Competence Reflection Essay
Amanda Monson, RN, CCRN Winona State University NURS612: Advanced Health Promotion for Families Jennifer Timm, DNP, RN, PHN and M. Helene Spencer, DNP, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC February 6, 2022
Cultural competency is an essential component of nursing care as we deal with many people of different cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and races. To provide the best care of the diverse patient populations we see, we need to be aware of our biases, cultural differences, and resources to ensure comprehensive and safe patient care. Thus, the nursing community must continue to develop professionally by supporting and implementing cultural competence programs. As Paddock (n.d) mentions, it is essential for organizations to be accountable, adaptable, and approachable regarding culturally sensitive care. The information provided in the cultural competency learning was fascinating. While many employers require annual training, it is not as detailed as the training presented this week. In particular, I found Kleinman's Explanatory Model very helpful. Culturally Connected (n.) provided examples of how the model could be implemented to understand better how the patient sees their illness. I began to review how I interview patients and change my overall approach to pick a better subjective experience from the patient. This can be very helpful in my workplace as perceptions of sleep disorders vary widely. In addition to models for communicating with patients holistically, I found the lecture on Defining Health and the various models of defining family health informative (Paddock, n.d). A surprising fact was not necessarily the information provided but the lack of resources that we utilize in healthcare. Working for a large organization, I expected more resources would be more readily available. While we have an office of Diversity and inclusion, finding just-in- time resources was more difficult than I anticipated. The tools provided in the Culturally connected Module proved to be very useful. In particular, I appreciate the D.I.V.E.R.S. tool to develop a personalized care plan incorporating a patient’s values and beliefs (Culturally Connected, n.).
addition, it will allow me to practice my skills and receive timely feedback, which will be extremely helpful for my professional development. We also can work with the Dental Hygiene students in the RCTC dental hygiene clinic. This not only allows us to network with other disciplines professionally, but it also provides a different patient base than we may have access to in our profession. We may see a variety of cultures and life experiences within the clinic that will allow us to explore our cultural interviewing. Enhancing our cultural competence will be essential for further clinical as well as we begin to network and develop professional relationships with a variety of cultures. Goals for Future Learning I have decided to develop enhanced knowledge, skills, and self-awareness through Motivational Interviewing training. We receive a short motivational interviewing training through our learning application in my place of employment; however, I feel as if I would benefit from more hands-on training and practice. My goal is to pursue a four-hour educational course offered through my workplace within three months, focusing on motivational interviewing. I believe this would be approved as an academic time to enhance my skills regarding teaching and counseling in my clinic and my clinical experiences. An additional goal I have is more closely related to my clinical work. After exploring the content this week, it has become apparent that the clinic I work without should complete additional training regarding working with interpreters. As our clinic has providers fluent in multiple languages, there has not been a standardized process for working with translators. General rules are followed, but additional training with interpreters on improving our practice and our documentation would be a great benefit. Setting up a meeting with the translating team would be beneficial to receive feedback and enhance our policies. My goal would be to meet
with a small group of multidisciplinary team members and the interpreting team within six months. This meeting will allow the team to draft an enhanced policy when working with translators and a tip sheet for providers to reference as needed. This week’s content has helped me understand that improvements are always to be made. I will need to ensure that I self-reflect often to provide my own biases do not become a barrier when working with patients. Additional practice, experiences, and development will be an essential component of my professional development.

This week’s reflection paper will focus on cultural competence as it relates to my practicum and personal experiences. From my perspective, cultural competence goes beyond tolerance for differences like ethnicity, age, gender, religion or sexual orientation. It’s not just about understanding diversity; it’s about diversity and inclusion. It requires allowing your professional and personal selves to be put in situations that push you outside of your comfort zone. Growing up in the U.S., as a Liberian, I never felt a sense of inclusion outside my family . While in secondary school , it was worse. I remember, my first high school job, many colleagues couldn't bear the emotional bullying associated with bearing traditional African names and opted to have their names changed. With that being said, knowledge is my substantial weakness while skills and attitude are my strengths regarding intercultural competence. Being able to effectively engage with others from different backgrounds and communities relates to skills and attitude that allows me to interact and work with people from different culture. Be aware, acknowledge and challenge my cultural assumptions/prejudices, be-liefs and values. By getting to know/learn about food, cultural celebrations, tradi-tions, language, dress, rituals is important in being culturally competent but NOT the only/most important part of being cultural competent. Most important part of be-ing cultural competent is ‘Managing Prejudices’ - all of us and everyone of us have some form/type of prejudice towards certain group of people (who are deemed different from us). Some people are uncomfortable with people who are skinny, have tattoos, have darker/lighter skin etc. Personally I find it difficult to work with people who have tattoos and it makes me ineffective in my deal-ings/interaction with them.
