This book deals with the cultural and social forces that give rise to opportunistic individuals. In the beginning of the book, Gladwell defines an outlier is as a person fit into our normal understanding of Gladwell says rise from nothing and that do owe somthing to parentage and patronage He is correct. We do owe something to parentage and patronage. We also owe something to the opportunities we have had had along the way. In Outliers, The lives of people who have achieved something great into world are told, while finding out what qualities make them stand apart from the crowd. The first part of Outliers is about opportunity. main argument is that success results from mixes of factors. He wants to convince the reader that these kinds of explanations of success work (Gladwell or that there is more to a success story than his or her individual talent. In the beginning of the book, Gladwell talks about Canadian hockey birth months. He discovers that of the best players have been born between January and March (Gladwell The players who are born in these months get coaching, play in the majority of the games, practice twice as much (Gladwell and also have better teammates. He provides facts and evidence to prove that random factors, such as date of birth, can be essential to success. In the middle of the book, Gladwell talks about the rule. The rule is that thousand hours of practice are required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a anything (Gladwell He provides an example of the Czech and Canadian national sports teams. No one born after September 1 was on the team. Since the prodigy does not get chosen, he does not get the extra practice. Without that extra practice, does not have a chance at hitting ten thousand hours the time the professional hockey teams start looking for players (Gladwell Without the rule, there is no way you can master the skills necessary to complete what you need to. Argumentative Essay On Outliers By George Gladwell

Society most of the time recognized exceptional individuals, whose performance in sports, science, arts, politics is vastly superior to that of the rest of the population. Speculations On the cause of these individuals’ extraordinary abilities and performance are as old as the first records of their accomplishments. Such as the influence of the ecology of the bodies, or the incidence of the stars and planets the day of the birth, or special gifts. As the humanity evolution all these theories loose acceptation. Others believed that the illustriousness of these individuals is inherited. Others as Gladwell, believe in the development leading by an exceptional performance and the genetic as a characteristic that mediates it through learning and …show more content…

If not, that you have to put forth more effort. Consequently, the 10,000 hour rules states, that in order to have an opportunity to success, the individual have to practice 10,000 hours to be well prepared. In my own personal experience with this statement, I believe that it is not only ten thousands hours that will propel one to succeed, also, the ability, physical specimen or timing could play a major roll. Take for instance Michael Jordan, he most definitely put in the hours to be a great at his craft., but, also he was 6’6 and could jump over anybody and most of all. He was a greater competitor. Sometimes it takes a major external change to cause and external change. In Jordan case, was the fact that he got cut by his high school coach. after that event, he was badly motivated for success and achieve greatness. Evidently, The Matthew effect open rider’s eyes, and I am not the exception. This effect occurs very frequently; we just don not see it or block it out. Or maybe invest those hours in the wrong field. It might be one of the reasons why a percent of the population does not develop better in society. it is not only 10,000 hours or advantages during your life that will help you to success. the combination of both and others factors that determines how successful an individual will

Outliers Gladwell

Malcolm Gladwell states in Outliers that 10,000 hours of practice in a sport or hobby or career, will propel one person over another. He tries to convince us with his argument by bringing up people like Bill Gates and the Beatles, stating that they spent more than 10,000 hours perfecting their craft. At first his argument seems pretty legit and holds merit, but then you begin to question. What if someone practices for 10,000 hours, but doesn 't put in much work? What if someone, who has spent few hours than 10,000 is excelling?

In this quote, Anne wanted everyone to know that everyone has their own definitions of success and have their own ways to get their. These two features can be seen in the books, The Outliers, The Last Lecture, Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul and the article, Catching Kayla, by Digital Sports News. “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome,” stated

Epstein Vs Malcolm Gladwell Essay

There is a direct correlation between practice and success, but not between naturally good and success. This shows that even though Thomas was able to succeed mass of success is straight from the amount of practice. Comparatively, Gladwell uses Mozart as another example. "Since he didn’t produce his greatest work until he had been composing for more than twenty years" (Gladwell 13). Mozart wasn’t able to just walk up to a podium and make a magical music.

Malcolm Gladwell's Argument Essay

With these facts, it is used in Gladwell's argument that we decide our destiny. Gladwell then includes psychologist Michael Howe, who explains that Mozart, professional composer, did not make his "masterwork" until he completed ten years of practice. This shows that Mozart's practice affected his work, and that making his practicing benefitted him more when it was at the top of his priorities (Gladwell 12). With Gladwell's strong evidence and research, he builds a higher quality argument of choices affecting our fate rather than natural

Malcom Gladwell's Outliers: The Story Of Success

In "Outliers: The story of success", Malcom Gladwell explained and gave examples of ways to be successful. There are many ways that Gladwell mentioned, such as luck, practice, background, family, and culture. There are many more of course, but I will save time. There are three of which I think are the most important, these being Intelligence, Social Skills, and Location; and these are explanations as to why I think these are the most important.

Negatives Of Outliers Malcolm Gladwell

One of the few negatives about book Outliers is that the author provides many arguments that an individual's success is influenced on situations in their lives that are inherited. For example one of the first examples Malcolm gladwell provides in the book is with hockey players. Gladwell explained that kids born in February have a better chance at playing professionally. This gave the impression that success is based more off of inheritance or ecology instead of individual merit and hard work.

The Outliers Gladwell Analysis

Preparation comes into play when the opportunity has been taken. Opportunities can motivate people to work harder. Gladwell uses the example of the ages of the Canadian hockey teams because there were “an incredible number of January, February, and March birth dates” (Gladwell 22). The cutoff dates for the pee wee hockey teams in Canada is January 1st, so all the boys born from January 2nd and onwards were put in the lower division teams so they were generally bigger and stronger than the boys born 10 or 11 months after them. It did not mean that the January boys had more talent, they just had a better opportunity because the coach would select the biggest and strongest players to play in the elite hockey team.

Success In Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers Essay

Success can come from many different variables, opportunities, and advantages. In Malcolm Gladwell’s novel, Outliers, Gladwell had popularized the theory that ten thousand hours of practice will eventually lead to success. Being the only factor, 10,000 hours of practice will not lead to success. In order to be elite and successful, you need other significant contributors in the equation.

Intrinsic factors critically considered when people think about the main components of success. However, Malcolm Gladwell, a famous writer, contradicts this tendency through the book, Outliers. The book, Outliers insists that extrinsic factors define success rather than the intrinsic ones. Nonetheless, Gladwell himself goes against the topic of Outliers in his assertion: “if you work hard enough and assert yourself, and use your mind and imagination, you can shape the world to your desires (Gladwell, 2008).” The assertion implies that individuals could achieve success only with those intrinsic factors.

Argumentative Essay On 10000 Hours

Ten thousand hours or 10 years is the duration in which someone must be willing to practice in order to achieve world class expertise in any desired skill. Utilizing this much time is the phenomenon known as the 10,000 hour rule. However, time is not the only criteria in need of consideration; in fact, people are gifted in multiple ways, but people do not take the time to pursue their niches. Therefore, the 10,000 hour rule allows people to take the time to evolve their natural gifts. Some may argue that, in reality, having 10 years of practice makes a substantial difference in skill development.

The Alaskan Bush is one of the hardest places to survive without any assistance, supplies, skills, and little food. Jon Krakauer explains in his biography, Into The Wild, how Christopher McCandless ventured into the Alaskan Bush and ultimately perished due to lack of preparation and hubris. McCandless was an intelligent young man who made a few mistakes but overall Krakauer believed that McCandless was not an ignorant adrenalin junkie who had no respect for the land. Krakauer chose to write this biography because he too had the strong desire to discover and explore as he also ventured into the Alaskan Bush when he was a young man, but he survived unlike McCandless. Krakauer’s argument was convincing because he gives credible evidence that McCandless was not foolish like many critics say he was.

Essay about Outliers Summaries

The introduction of Outliers begins with an inspection of Italian American immigrants near the end of the 19th century, the founders of a small town in Pennsylvania, called Roseto. In a study conducted by physician Stewart Wolf, et al. researchers set out to decide how the people of Roseto were able to live longer, healthier lives than that of the people in the towns of the same region, as well as the rest of the nation. The secret of the success for the people of Roseto could be found in a nearly unanimous social integration, which focused on respect for elders, a common set of religious beliefs, and an egalitarian way of thinking. But really, those talents and abilities came about through a series of explainable, fortunate circumstances that we should recognize, learn to use wisely and be grateful for.

Similarities and Differences of Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell, and the Essay Self-Reliance, by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell, and the essay Self-Reliance, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, interact with each other quite well with many similarities and differences. In Gladwell’s book, he shares many stories of how people become successful, explaining that success is not achieved based on the character traits and work habits of an individual. He says, “We all know that successful people come from hardy seeds. But do we know enough about the sunlight that warmed them, the soil in which they put down the roots…” (Gladwell, 20) Gladwell insists that success counts on where an individual comes from and all aspects of their life. However, in Self-Reliance, Emerson never mentions success. He explains the importance of individualism and free thought. “What I must do is all that concerns me, not what people think.” (Emerson, 9) Emerson argues that everyone should go out and seek the life that pleases them, whether that is success, or not. Despite the differences in the two texts, in their writings, both authors show how individuals can step away from the rest of society and become outliers.

Teens today could improve upon so much to get a better chance to become more successful in life. In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell argues that a child’s performance level for anything has to do with their culture. He says that people of Asian descent will focus more and try harder when they do not understand something. He also talks about how constantly practicing can make you master a skill. If teens can use ideas that Gladwell talks about they can become more successful.

An Outlier is someone who stands out in a group due to their mastery of a certain skill and because of that they are successful. According to Gladwell not anyone can become successful; it takes the right circumstances and opportunities. Human’s capability seems limitless, and if we put in the time and hard work we can achieve our goals. We as a society love to think that a person may become successful and that we all have the same opportunities and chance of succeeding if we just work hard enough. According to Malcom Gladwell, the author of the book Outlier’s these common beliefs are incorrect and are not the means of a person becoming successful. The main theme throughout Gladwell’s Outlier’s is that successful

Analysis Of The Book ' Outliers '

The book "Outliers" has done justice to its definition. It has clearly defined how the story of successful people is different in terms of their struggle, their success and their motivation. This book has even compared the success stories of some very successful personalities. There is difference between successful people and extremely successful people. The book has focused on extremely successful people. The books focuses on how difficult is to achieve success and what are the milestones that needs to be fulfilled to be a successful one. Being successful is not an overnight dream continuous efforts and strong determination are the key factors for the success which can be clearly seen in this book. The book has also focused on the term "chance" which played a vital role in the life of the successful people described in the bok. It is very obvious that people needs just one chance to prove themselves. All the people who have struggled in their life isn 't a successful one. The people who are the main highlights of this books are the people who have achieved victory over their struggle. Those people got a single chance to prove themselves and it worked out well for them. For instance: Who don 't know Bill Gates. He is still one of the richest man of the world. People may think he is very educated, but the fact is he got a chance to prove himself in his life. Although, being a drop out people believed him and he used that talent in a positive way to lead the

The goal for many is to be successful in their specific craft, and even from the title Outliers: The Story of Success Gladwell advertises his own story of success, and the audience believes if they follow the methods that successful people use then they will be successful too. Gladwell gives testimonies of people that would be predictably successful but never made it far due to not having a community to support them to open opportunities. Outliers: The Key to Success

In the book Outliers  by Malcolm Gladwell, the author presents a series of arguments backing up his idea that “if you work hard enough and assert yourself, and use your mind and imagination, you can shape the world to your desires” (Gladwell 151). Based on the evidence that was provided in the book, I somewhat believe in Gladwell’s argument. In the first chapter he discusses why luck and opportunities play a part in becoming successful, however later in the book he states that success comes from hard work alone. I believe that it is a combination of both. In an article review over Outliers  by The Investors Podcast, the author comes to the conclusion that “…it is safe to say that success is a combination of hard work, opportunities, and talent”. This quote supports my argument because it suggests that success doesn't come from one single component, but instead a mixture of a few. I believe that in some specific instances, Malcolm Gladwell’s claim about hard work and success is true, but not all, so I will be qualifying his claim. For example, Malcolm Gladwell’s theory of 10,000 hours displays a variance of circumstances in which people become successful from a combination of hard work, opportunities, and talent. This theory claims that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert at any kind of activity. I believe that this theory contributes to the rule of success along with hard work, talent and opportunities.

While it is possible to achieve success with just hard work, the possibility becomes greater with opportunities and talent. Someone can work very hard at something but if, for instance, they were born in an unlucky time period, their lack of opportunities could make the difference between becoming successful and not. One example of someone who was given countless opportunities to work hard and achieve something is Bill Gates. He was born in 1955 which was at just the right time for him to be exposed to the new computer system in the 1960’. He first discovered computer programming when he was in eighth grade and his school opened up a new computer lab with the newest system for time programming in the country. After he became interested in it, he began spending all of his time in the computer lab doing programming. Because of this unique program, Gates was able to spend 20-30 hours a week using the programming system and became more and more familiar with it. All of these chances gave him more time to practice which eventually added up to way over 10,000 hours. So by the time Bill Gates wanted to pursue a career in programming he had already accumulated 10,000 plus hours in the area, making him an expert on it. Bill Gates said, “I had a better exposure to software development at a young age than I think anyone did in that period of time, and all because of an incredibly lucky series of events” (Gladwell 55). From this quote we can see that Gates is not taking all the credit for his success, but instead he acknowledges that he was lucky. Although he did have to work hard to achieve his goal, the possibility wouldn't have been there if he wouldn't have had so many opportunities. Because of his opportunities combined with the hard work he put in, he got the chance to practice over 10,000 hours which led to his success.

As I grew even older I began to play the sports that I loved so much, football, basketball, and baseball. Being a three sport athlete my entire athletic career, I have seen the benefits that one sport brings to another. It also brings a certain level of sanity being a multi-sport athlete. Doing the same thing every day can become a grind and the brain has an amazing tendency to become uninterested or bored. That is why, in today’s world, when I see or hear about kids specializing in a sport at an early age I question the thought process behind it. What are the benefits? Does this really help in the long run? All of these questions lead me to one conclusion: Children should not specialize in one sport so early in their lives. We will begin with the thought process behind specialization in sports. In 2008 Malcolm Gladwell came out with a book titled “Outliers.” In the book Gladwell speaks of a 10,000 hour rule for mastery at any subject, or for out purposes sport.
