English-based Undergraduate and Graduate Programs in FSE
Fostering globally competitive talent.
With the aim of global excellence, the School of Fundamental Science and Engineering established its International Course in 2010, transitioning to an English-based program in 2018. All courses are conducted in English, attracting outstanding students worldwide and fostering a collaborative environment where domestic and international students learn together, promoting meaningful exchange among diverse backgrounds.
Undergraduate Programs Graduate Programs
English-Based Undergraduate Programs (2 majors)
Currently, there are two majors in place:
Major in Mathematical Sciences (MS)
Major in Mathematical Sciences (MS) offers a broad curriculum ranging from fundamental mathematics to applied mathematics. Beyond teaching mathematical knowledge, we emphasize connecting mathematics with science and engineering to impart essential mathematical skills crucial for contributing to society. Specifically, we focus on three critical areas in modern society: nonlinear mathematics, computational mathematics, and statistical mathematics. Moreover, we design a curriculum system in collaboration with other minors to go beyond existing frameworks and establish new domains in mathematics. This allows students to study science and engineering from an interdisciplinary perspective through a mathematical lens. Department of Mathematics and Department of Applied Mathematics oversee this major
Major in Computer Science and Communications Engineering (CSCE)
Major in Computer Science and Communications Engineering (CSCE) is established with the aim of providing advanced knowledge integrating the fields of computer science and information and communication engineering. In the field of computer science, it primarily covers the foundational theories of computation, information, and communication. In information and communication engineering, the focus is on data processing, content analysis, as well as computer, communication devices, and computer network systems. Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Department of Communications and Computer Engineering oversee this major.

English-Based Graduate Programs (6 departments)
The Graduate School of Fundamental Science and Engineering conducts educational and research activities in various specialized fields, focusing on foundational scientific and technological principles related to key technologies supporting society: information, mechanical engineering, aerospace, electronics, materials, energy, and arts and media. It centers around mathematics as well as applied mathematics, which bridges these fields. By attracting students with diverse backgrounds from around the world, the graduate school enhances opportunities for cultural exchange and contributes to the deepening and advancement of each specialized field. Moreover, it aims to creatively explore new academic domains, pioneering the era and fostering researchers and highly specialized scientists capable of thriving globally.

How to Enter
Application procedure.
This application procedure is for the PhD program in collaboration with Waseda University and NIMS. For the application details including the document format, please see the university website of Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering.
Contact a possible prospective supervisor prior to apply
All applicants are required to apply for the pre-screening, conducted on the same schedule as NIMS Graduate Research Assistantship . Only applicants who qualified for the pre-screening (document screening and interview) can submit the university application documents to Waseda University.
Please make sure to choose the appropriate department which the prospective professor is assigned.
- Department of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering , Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering
- Department of Materials Science , Graduate School of Fundamental Science and Engineering
University Application
The university application procedure is different from how the applicant has earned (or to be expected to have) a master's degree or equivalent.
- Japanese-based Program If you obtained a master's degree from a Japanese university, please apply through the General Selection.
- AO Admission to English-based Graduate Program If you obtained a master's degree instructed only in English from a non-Japanese university, your application will be made through AO Admission to English-based Graduate Program.
University Admission Guidelines
From application to admission.
Contact the professor
See “ Program members ” to find the matches between your interested research and the professor's research. Email the professor your CV with a cover letter expressing your interest in the research subject.
Prepare for the application documents to NIMS
Please prepare for the following documents and submit to NIMS.
- 1. Application form for the NIMS Graduate Research Assistantship * On the application form, please make sure to include the names and email address of at least 2 references. NIMS will directly contact the references regarding the applicant. The communication with the references is an important part of the assistantship selection, which is confidential and used solely for the purpose of assessing the applicant. The applicant must agree to waive the right of access.
- 2. Academic transcripts of both undergraduate and graduate (in PDF format)
- 3. PDF copy of the TOEIC/TOEFL/IELTS score certificate. The score must be from the exam taken within 2 years.
