PhD in Polymer Precision Doping for Quantum Devices
We are offering a challenging position as a full-time (100%) PhD Student at the Institute of Electrical and Micro Engineering at EPFL, Lausanne. We are delighted to offer a fully funded PhD positions as part of an international collaborative project aimed at pioneering new methods in quantum device nanofabrication. This Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) funded project, a joint effort by EPFL, University of Basel, and CNM-Barcelona, combines advanced nanopatterning, precision doping, and state-of-the-art surface characterization techniques to enable scalable quantum devices.
More specifically, this project will explore polymer-based precision doping techniques for silicon, with an emphasis on deterministic placement of phosphorus dopants to create single-atom devices. The work includes developing and applying novel doping methods for quantum systems such as semiconducting qubits.
- A MSc degree in the fields of Microengineering, Physics, Chemistry, materials science, or related fields with a focus on molecular doping and polymer chemistry;
- Good communication skills and willingness to work as part of a team;
- Enthusiasm, scientific curiosity, eager to learn, good organizational skills, rigor in experimental work;
- High level of motivation for academic research work;
- Fluency in English.
- 4 years to complete your PhD with a competitive remuneration;
- You will be part of the Doctoral Program in Microsystems and Microelectronics EDMI ;

Ph.D. in Synthetic Polymer Chemistry: The Laboratory of Synthetic Polymer Chemistry (LCPS), led by Prof. Suong “Su” Nguyen at the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering (ISIC) at EPFL, Switzerland, is inviting applications for 2–3 inaugural Ph.D. positions. The research will focus on integrating organic synthesis, catalysis, photo/electrochemistry, and polymer chemistry to develop innovative polymers with unique properties for applications in plastic sustainability, biomedicine, and advanced materials.

Eligibility/Qualification
Ideal Ph.D. candidates should possess:
- A four-year Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science .
- Enthusiasm, self-motivation, creativity, and team spirit.
- Knowledge and research experience in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, materials science, and related fields, with a priority given to candidates experienced in small molecule and polymer synthesis.
- Familiarity with standard structural characterization techniques (e.g., NMR, IR, mass spectrometry, chromatography). Experience with material characterization techniques (e.g., GPC, tensile testing, rheology, DMA, DSC, and TGA) is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Proficiency in English (verbal and written).
Job Description
Selected Ph.D. students will engage in groundbreaking research combining organic synthesis, catalysis, photo/electrochemistry, and polymer chemistry. The research will aim to create and analyze polymers with novel architectures and properties, contributing to advancements in plastic sustainability, biomedical applications, and materials with unique electronic and optical characteristics. Research projects will be customized based on the students’ interests and expertise.
