Genetic engineering makes it possible to change the hereditary properties of an organism by introducing changes in its genetic material. It involves isolating nucleic acid fragments from a donor cell and transferring them to the cells of another organism called the recipient. The incorporation of foreign genes into the cell's DNA causes a change in its genetic information and becomes apparent through the presence of new, desired traits. The relevant DNA fragments are excised from the donor genome by means of restriction enzymes and then introduced into special carriers called vectors, for example plasmid ones. They are equipped with so-called helper sequences such as marker genes, allowing selection of organisms in which the introduction of a new DNA segment was successful.
Genetic engineering methods are used, among others, to create transgenic organisms (GMOs genetically modified organisms), as well as in cloning and gene therapy. They have also been used in the production of drugs, amino acids, vitamins and growth factors. This is of great practical importance. For example, prior to the development of insulin biosynthesis, it could only be obtained from animal pancreas. This process was very expensive and did not allow to obtain the amount of medicine needed for people with diabetes. Genetic engineering also plays an important role in the development of genetics, because thanks to its techniques it allows to know the functions performed by specific genes.
Genetically modified animals, transgenic animals - animals whose DNA has been modified by genetic engineering methods to obtain the desired phenotypic effect. Modified animals are very useful in many scientific and medical research. On such animals, disease processes can be observed in vivo, but also genetically modified animals can produce human hormones, proteins etc. Mice are a very popular target for genetic modification. To facilitate drug toxicity research, scientists created mice with a weakened immune system. Others, in turn, implanted the human gene in mice responsible for being able to function with less sleep.
As part of the study, the shape of the human ear was implanted into the back of the mouse to better understand how they can help make parts of the body for humans.
Modifications to animals are mainly aimed at obtaining animals with the desired characteristics in breeding - faster growth (pigs or fish), their use in the production of proteins, enzymes and other substances used in the pharmaceutical industry (as bioreactors), immunization against diseases. The first modified animal was created in 1974 (it was a mouse embryo). Animals can be genetically modified as part of gene therapy.. Gene therapy is a method of treatment involving the introduction of foreign DNA or RNA nucleic acids into the body's cells. The therapeutic effect is caused by genetic information contained in the introduced DNA or RNA. It changes the defective genetic record of a sick person and causes that the cause of the disease (mutated gene, defective genetic material) is removed.
