Why Schools should Start Later for the Sake of Students’ Well-being

This essay is about the benefits of starting school later for students, emphasizing improvements in health, academic performance, and safety. It argues that adolescents’ natural sleep cycles require more rest, and early school start times lead to chronic sleep deprivation, negatively impacting cognitive function and mood. Research shows that later start times result in better grades and test scores due to increased alertness and engagement. Additionally, well-rested teens are less likely to be involved in car accidents, enhancing their safety. The essay also addresses potential challenges, such as disruptions to family schedules and extracurricular activities, and suggests solutions for a smooth transition to later start times.

How it works

The argument over when schools should start has heated up in recent years, with a growing number of scholars, parents, and educators supporting later start times. There are many strong arguments in favor of this reform, especially those that have to do with teenage health and academic achievement. We may gain a better understanding of why starting school later could significantly improve students' lives by delving into these arguments and addressing the issues raised by a change in timetable.

Teenagers' sleep habits are one of the best justifications for starting school later. Need a custom essay on the same topic? Give us your paper requirements, choose a writer and we’ll deliver the highest-quality essay! Order now

Teenagers and adults naturally have distinct sleep cycles from adolescents. They require more sleep and typically go to bed later. Early start hours for schools, however, conflict with these biological cycles, causing many teenagers to suffer from chronic sleep deprivation. This sleep deprivation can have a negative impact on their mood, memory, and cognitive skills. Based on studies, pupils are more likely to receive the appropriate amount of sleep when schools start later. This can improve their mental health overall, increase their ability to concentrate, and decrease absenteeism.

Beyond the health advantages, later starts are associated with higher academic achievement. Research indicates that students who get enough sleep exhibit higher levels of alertness and engagement during class. The American Academy of Pediatrics, for instance, discovered that pupils in high school who enrolled later in the year achieved better test scores and grades than students who enrolled earlier. This is explained by increased information retention capacity, less drowsiness during the day, and improved attention. Students who get enough sleep are less prone to burn out and are more likely to engage in active learning in the classroom.

The advantages of starting school later extend beyond health and academics. There's also a safety factor to consider. Sleep-deprived teenagers are at a higher risk of engaging in risky behaviors and being involved in accidents, especially while driving. In locations where school start times were moved back, there was a drop in car accidents involving teenage drivers, according to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This drop is largely because well-rested drivers are more alert and less prone to mistakes on the road. Therefore, shifting school start times could significantly impact student safety both in and out of school.

However, implementing later start times isn't without its challenges. One major concern is the potential disruption to family schedules and after-school activities. Parents who depend on early school start times for childcare or work commitments might find a later start inconvenient. Additionally, extracurricular activities, sports practices, and part-time jobs typically occur after school, and a later start could push these activities further into the evening, leaving less time for homework and relaxation.

Despite these challenges, many schools that have moved to later start times have found ways to manage them. Adjusting bus schedules, coordinating with local businesses, and rearranging after-school activities can help accommodate the new start times. It's crucial to engage the community and plan thoroughly to address these logistical issues and ensure a smooth transition. By involving parents, teachers, and students in the decision-making process, schools can develop strategies that meet everyone's needs.

In summary, the argument for later school start times is backed by extensive research highlighting the benefits for students' health, academic performance, and safety. While there are logistical challenges to consider, the potential positive outcomes make a strong case for reevaluating school schedules. By prioritizing the well-being and success of students, communities can create a more supportive learning environment and promote the overall development of young people.

Persuasive Speech: Why School Should Start Later

Daily, at least one person complains about how early they have to get up in the morning. 6:00? 5:00? Is it the school’s starting time? Imagine getting up at 8:00 instead of 6 to get to school. Today we are going to talk about whether or not the school day should start later. When you don’t have enough energy for school, you don’t do well. No one necessarily said that it was the student’s fault. Many elementary school students are forced to get up at 5:00 in the morning to get ready! School just starts far too early. If Principals and school districts realize this, then why not make the change? If school districts were to make this change, it would mess with extra-curricular activities, after school sports, and even pick up times. A girl

Rhetorical Analysis Of Me My Sleep And I By Priscilla Shikanth

Have you ever just wanted to snuggle into your covers and never leave the warm comfort of your bed? Or have you ever asked your yelling parents for 5 more minutes of sleep on a school morning? I know I have. As a freshman in high school, waking up at 6 in the morning five days a week has got to be the one thing I dread. However, my private high school in Massachusetts has implemented one day of the week where school starts an hour later.

The Pros And Cons Of Changing School Start Times

School start time and its effect on students has been an issue that many teachers and parents have argued over for many years. In districts all throughout the country, elementary, middle, and high schools start classes around different times, commonly making high schools begin their classes the earliest. The current standard start time for most schools is between 7-9 am, with some starting even earlier. This day-to-day schedule has been deeply rooted into the mind of many students for as long as they can remember with many believing that any type of change to this schedule would not benefit students or their studies. However, some experts argue that starting school later would have positive effects on both the physical and mental health of

Why Do School Start Later

I never want to get up in the morning and I’m pretty sure a lot of other people would agree. Why does school start early? In my opinion school would be about 5 times better if it started. School isn’t really bad at all. It 's just the fact that I have to get up early that makes going to school depressing.

The Pros And Cons Of Later School Start Times

For these important and practical reasons, schools should not change school start times. If schools delay the start time, after-school activities will be rescheduled and no dramatic impact on sleep times will

Why School Should Start Later In The Day

Sleeping Schools Countless students all over the US struggle to keep their eyes open throughout the day because school classes start too early in the morning. If we were able to give an hour to students in the morning, we would see an increase in their physical mentality, their academic skill level, and an overall happier lifestyle. Many people will argue that starting school too late in the morning will cause after school activities -- such as sports and other clubs -- no time to meet before the night ends. But I must mention that we don’t need to push the start time that much later to see a huge improvement on student’s test scores, overall grades, and a student’s mood. The current school start time is unacceptable when thought about logically, and we must make the changes to have school start at a later time.

Why School Should Start Later

There are many speculation on if schools should start later. Yes school should start later because students need more sleep, there would be better attendance and there would be less car crashes among teens. This essay will explain why school should start later, and how it is important for students. One reason school should start later is sleep. Students need at least seven hours of sleep at night, when they don't get enough sleep they become less motivated.

School should Start Later School districts should make a change to their schedule. School starting later would fix a bunch of huge problems about school districts. Some people may say that school starting early isn’t that bad though, it would just be annoying to wake up early. School districts should change their time because of the bus arrival times, the education of students, and sleep concerns of kids.

Persuasive Essay: Why Do Later School Start Times?

That’s why schools should push back school times for teens health. Others claim that schools shouldn’t push back school time because, it will affect after school activities. They say that this would be a few of the actives that would be affected. After school sports, other after school’s programs, jobs, babysitting younger siblings, etc. Those are just some of the programs they mentioned.

Persuasive Essay: Why School Start Times Should Be Later

Sarah Cardillo October 31, 2017 Class Period 3 Why School Start Times Should Be Later Teenagers and kids these days are loosing a lot of their sleep time due to early school start times. Teenagers aren’t getting the sleep they need to have their minds and bodies function correctly. Not getting enough sleep can lead to many health problems. Teenagers and kids not getting their sleep can result in many different mental and physical problems.

Persuasive Essay: Why Middle School Should Start Later

School Should Start Later A recent poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation found that 60% of children under the age of 18 complained of being tired during the day, according to their parents, and 15% said they fell asleep at school during the year. This proves that kids aren’t getting enough sleep before school. I believe that a later middle school start time would have many beneficial effects on kids. As a result, kids would be more focused in class because they would be getting more sleep, that would lead to better grades, and finally reduced absenteeism.

Should School Start Later Essay

However, more problems will be present if a new schedule is created. Osage Trail Middle School and Fort Osage High School should not opt for a later start time because it would cost the school more money for bus transportation, could conflict with students’ jobs and other responsibilities, and doesn’t necessarily mean students will be more rested. “In the current economic climate, many school systems are cutting costs by increasing class size (i.e., hiring fewer teachers). Achieving the AAP's well-intentioned goal would require districts to spend more money on buses at the same time they spend less in the classroom”(Source 3). Schools are already having a hard time paying for necessary items and funding for their schools.

Persuasive Essay On Later School Start Times

Later School Start Times “‘I’ve gained an hour of sleep,’ she said. ‘I definitely feel a lot better. I find myself waking up around 7:30 without an alarm because it’s a natural time. It’s a great, great feeling.’” Says Lily Grey Rudges, a high school student in Seattle(At these schools, later start times get an A-plus for youths needing more sleep).

Wrong, Especially if a student is involved in extracurricular activities such as sports, band, or even having a job. Once a student athlete gets out of school after 3:00 pm, they have practice during the appropriate season which would have them returning home around 5 or 6 o’clock depending on the amount of practice needed. If schools change they school time they would get out later. Leaving sports to either not have practice or have to get out of practices super late. And if they have later practices then they would have to go home late and still have to do their homework.

Persuasive Essay: Should School Start Later?

I’m pretty sure most people hate getting up super early in the morning to get to school. Am I right? Well I think it’s the worst! In my opinion, I think school should start later because it is better for one’s health and it’s better for students’ concentration in class.

Persuasive Essay On Later School Start Time

A reason for this is that waking up too early could be dangerous. In highschool students begin to learn to drive, some owning their own cars to drive to school (Pietrangelo and Watson). When they have to wake up early in order to drive to school they may be too tired for it to be considered safe for them to drive on the roads. This leads to car crashes that leaves their lives and the person who they hits life in danger. Not to mention those who are close enough to walk to school also may be too tired to properly pay attention.

Persuasive Essay About Why School Should Start Later

Why school should start later persuasive essay

Table of contents:

  • Introduction
  • Body paragraphs

It’s one of the favoured topics among high school students. You’re tired. After being up late last night, your school day started at 8:30 am this morning, and you want to know if anything can be done about it. Or perhaps you’re an early bird and like the time that school starts in the morning. Well, you can write a persuasive essay, and maybe if it’s good enough, your voice will be heard, either way.

Start off by taking a firm stance with your thesis statement. Whether you feel school should start later in the morning, or should not, you need to figure out why, and the reasons and benefits (or negatives) in your own mind, first of all. Make a quick outline with your statement of purpose at the top, followed by each point you want to make and the evidence you are going to use to support each point. Remember that you can use any evidence you like in a persuasive essay; it need not be restricted to facts and figures, but can be anecdotal, emotive, or statistical. Think of yourself as a politician trying to persuade an audience to vote for him or her.

Introduction examples

Pro: It’s been proven in many studies that teenagers do better with a later start to the day. With this in mind, why do we still start school at 8:30 in the morning?

Con: Starting later in the day at school interferes with parents’ working days, encourages students to stay up late, and would cause problems with after-school practices for sports.

Moving on into the body of your essay, carry on following your outline, setting up each point and presenting your evidence as you go. Have a look at potential titles, too, which should be reflective of your thesis statement.

Body paragraphs examples

Pro: Teenagers in high school should start at about 10 am. This would allow for a leisurely morning, making the day start off less fraught and stressful. A teenager could stay up until midnight or 1 am and still get a decent amount of sleep, which doesn’t happen when they have to wake up at 6:30 or 7 am. Traffic, too, will be more spread out, easing congestion, and students can take the time to get a good breakfast and be really mentally prepared for the day.

Con: Parents worry about getting themselves to work on time even when school starts at 8:30. A lot of working days would have to change significantly for people to get to work on time if high school started at 10 am instead. This could lead to large amounts of business disruption, and possible discrimination against parents for needing more flexible working hours.

Your conclusion is your last chance to leave an impression on your audience, so make it significant and meaningful. Start by briefly reiterating what your points were, and finish with a bang by calling on your audience to take some action in response to your essay.

Conclusion examples

Pro: Starting later results in benefits for teachers, benefits for students, and also for parents. Think about how rested you’d feel if you had a full eight hours or more sleep each night, and how much more you could get done in your day.

Con: A later school start will throw Australian cities into chaos and maybe even cause some parents to face consequences at work. The way things are now is fine, and there’s no need to fix what isn’t broken.
