Public speaking has long been challenging, coming of age ritual that all school-aged children had to endure. The instructions were simple: prepare a 3-5 minute speech to be written on 3x5 note cards. Just like being forced to dissect a frog, several years later, a student’s first speech was a defining moment in his/her early educational career, as each student would be faced with a fight-or-flight-like response where some would be terrified beyond belief.
Over the years, technology has helped to make public speaking easier. From chalkboards to flipcharts, to overhead projectors, access to innovation has allowed many individuals (both students and professionals) to present/speak with greater ease. But it was in 1987 that the world was introduced to the software that would revolutionize the art of public speaking and presentations when a company named Microsoft released its first version of PowerPoint .
Of all its accomplishments, PowerPoint has become an invaluable tool for removing the fear in public speaking. Public speaking has long been one of the top fears that students and professionals alike have to face. PowerPoint helps to lessen much of the anxiety that can normally be focused on a (potentially nervous) speaker and divide it between the speaker and his/her presentation. It also aids the presenter, in that he/she can craft a series of slides that serve as powerful visual aids to enforce the points that he/she is trying to convey.
The single greatest asset of PowerPoint is its simplistic ability to create stunning presentations from scratch. The software provides dozens of slide and design templates that can be applied or removed without losing any of the content. So, an individual can create all of the content of a presentation, and then go back and test out different formats and designs. For those with a more creative streak, PowerPoint allows a great deal of customization with its design elements; creating new slide templates, new color schemes, new font combinations, etc.
PowerPoint takes the process of creating slides and makes it very intuitive. A variety of different slide templates are preloaded into the software. Users simply choose the type of slide they wish to use and then select the individual areas of the slides (the “placeholders”) they wish to add content to. Content can include text, charts, tables, pictures, etc. Presentations can include audio effects, music, pre-recorded narration, and video.
Long gone are those infamous 3x5 note cards, as PowerPoint offers something called Presenter View. Presenter View is an enhanced view that only the presenter can see on their computer. It shows the current slide, along with a notes section. It also displays the upcoming slide, the total elapsed time that the presentation has been going for, and provides annotation tools to be used by the presenter, such as a pen to mark-up slides, or a highlighter to bring attention to certain points.
PowerPoint can also be used to transform a standard, bullet-point presentation into more of a story. Slide transitions which are easily selected will change the way one slide leads to the next. Animations can be applied to particular areas of content that can allow a single one bullet point, of a 5-bullet point list, to appear on the slide, one-by-one, at the presenter’s request. With animations, a presenter can also have content areas draw emphasis, or have certain areas exit the slide (disappear) as new content appears, so as not to overload the audience visually.
PowerPoint also has many different uses beyond just standard presentations. Companies often use PowerPoint (when a presentation is saved as a PDF) to serve as a catalog of goods and services to be sent out to customers. Presentations can have timings attached to each slide and be looped into a continuous rhythm as one might see at a trade show booth, or perhaps even a doctor’s office.
While there will always be a certain element of fear when it comes to presenting in front of one’s peers, PowerPoint is a powerful resource that helps a presenter feel more confident. It takes ordinary content and easily allows the user to style it in an extraordinary way. Learning PowerPoint is not just about “what” the software can do; it is about how easily and quickly the software can do it (efficiency of use).

Managing Partner
HIS Capital
The process
We’ll kick off a project with a 20-minute phone call to discuss your goals, brand identity, and timeline to ensure that your project goes smoothly.
Based on our discussion, I’ll send you a creative direction of 2-3 slides to ensure I’m headed in the right direction. My goal here is to amaze you!
I’ll incorporate your feedback from the creative direction and complete the design of the entire deck. I’ll edit until you’re perfectly happy – usually 1-2 revisions.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a typical project take.
A typical project takes 5-7 days to complete. Faster timelines may be possible. Feel free to reach out to discuss current project estimates.
What if I'm in a BIG hurry?
Other clients’ schedules may shift, leaving availability for rush projects. Please feel free to reach out if you need a project expedited to see if I have availability. Rush fees are 100% of the project cost for a 48-hour turnaround and 50% for 48-96 hour turnarounds.
In what format should I send you my content?
You are welcome to send your content already on slides or in outline format. If you have a specific vision for a particular slide, feel free to include an inspirational graphic or description of your vision to maximize efficiency and reduce turnaround time.
What else do you need from me to get started?
If you have high-resolution version of your logo in PNG, EPS or AI format, please send it, along with any style guides you may have for your brand. If you do not have a style guide, I can follow your website style to ensure consistency of your brand.
What if I don’t have a style guide?
If you do not have a style guide, I can follow your website style to ensure consistency of your brand. If you do not have a website or it does not currently reflect the direction you’d like to go, feel free to send over any other designs or examples you may have or like. Alternatively, I can propose a design that represents your brand.
How does payment work?
At the end of the project, I’ll send you an invoice that you can pay via credit card online.
How do you source photos? Are those an additional charge?
I use Shutterstock to license photography. Technically, those assets are licensed to me so if you are going to use them in the public domain you will need to license them to you or your company. I can provide a collection for quick access to license the images. Shutterstock packages are very reasonably priced at $3 or less per image.
What if I’m not happy with the final product?
We will begin the project with a creative direction, which is 2-3 designed slides, to ensure that I am the right designer for your project and that we efficiently get to a presentation that WOWs. If I am unable to create a design that you like during that process, you will not be charged.
If there are a few slides that need additional revisions at the end of the project, I am happy to provide those to ensure you love the final product.
Will I be able to edit the final presentation?
Absolutely! There may be occasional design elements that are created in Photoshop and imported in, but to the extent possible, all text is added in PowerPoint so that you can easily edit it.
How will we coordinate and communicate during a project?
I can communicate with you in whichever fashion you prefer. Most of my clients prefer email, but I am happy to collaborate with you in Google Drive, Dropbox, Slack or any other platform that is in your workflow.
What if I don’t want my content in your portfolio?
That’s not a problem at all. Just let me know when we start working together and I’ll place a note in your client file to keep your content out of my portfolio.
Additionally, if you would like for me to sign an NDA, I’d be happy to do so.
