Supplies Needed to Make a Witches Brew:
We use affiliate links on site to help you easily find the items we recommend.
- Baking Soda
- Citric Acid (find it here )
- Food Dye (or a washable liquid watercolor )
- Plastic Cauldrons (we used these )
To turn this witches brew sensory activity into a science experiment you will also need:
- White Vinegar
These two items are completely optional. Feel free to skip them if you just want to create potions!
Witches Brew Science Activity Directions:
To make this witches brew you don’t really need to do much. Simply set out the items on a tray or other surface that can get messy and let kids explore!
It’s really that simple!!
One of the great things about using this witches brew as just a sensory activity is that it uses citric acid.
In the past we have done quite a bit of fizzy sensory bins using vinegar…and well vinegar has a very harsh smell. For kids that struggle with scents, a vinegar sensory bin won’t be the most fun.
Citric acid though is scentless. It’s the perfect alternative to still do those fizzy activities with sensory sensitive kids.
To turn this sensory activity into a science experiment you will have to provide kids something to test. When we did this activity we tested four different variables to see which potion would fizz up the most.
1. Baking Soda + Citric Acid + Water
2. Baking Soda + Vinegar + Water
3. Baking Soda + Citric Acid + Water with Dish Soap
4. Baking Soda + Vinegar + Water with Dish Soap
You could even take it a step further and test ratios of each to see if there is a magical ratio to the perfect potion!

Witches Brew Science Experiment With Kids
Would you like a great way to get your kids excited about STEM this Halloween? This Witches Brew Science Experiment is sure to be a hit!
Double double, toil, and trouble. Halloween is such a fun holiday for kids because it really ignites their imagination. One of the most quintessential Halloween characters is, of course, the witch. You can just imagine the witch in the middle of the forest, mixing up her potions and witches brew.
Only you don’t have to just imagine it. You and your kids can actually make some witches brew of your own! This is a fantastic STEM activity to do with your kids and it will totally get them excited about science.. and about Halloween!
The fun thing about this witches brew science experiment is that it is ridiculously easy to create but the effects will have everyone oooh-ing and awe-ing.

What you will need to do the Witches Brew Science Experiment:
- ½ cup white vinegar for each color
- ¼ to 1 cup baking soda
- Food coloring, in various colors (make sure to try purple, green, blue, orange, and red!)
- Caudron Kettles ( you can pick some up from Amazon )
- Small cups to mix the vinegar and food coloring
- A spoon for the baking soda
- Optional: a tray or cookie sheet to contain the mess… because this science experiment will get messy
This witches brew science experiment is totally safe for kids. None of the ingredients are toxic, even if kids somehow end up swallowing some of it. But this activity has a defintie mess factor.. especially if you are doing it with younger kids.
Unless you want stained clothes, I would have kids put on a smock or old clothes before doing this activity.
How to conduct this experiment:
1. In individual cups, mix food coloring with vinegar.
2. Add baking soda to the cauldron or whatever container you have.
3. Pour one color of vinegar over the baking soda and watch the eruption.
4. To create a more continuous eruption, stir the baking soda with a popsicle stick or spoon as more vinegar is added.
The Science Behind it!
When you mix baking soda with vinegar, a chemical reaction is created because baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When you mix them the chemical reaction makes CO2. This gas is lighter than air, so it causes the mixture to rise. And then the liquid of the vinegar mixture traps the gas bubbles.. which causes the mixture to bubble and foam over the sides of the contain. And there you have your witches brew!
If you want to add an educational component to this fun activity, you can ask your kids to come up with a theory about what they think will happen before you add the vinegar to the baking soda. Also, the kids can mix up how much baking soda you add to the cauldrons.. or even how much vinegar you pour into the baking soda.

Spooky Witch’s brew science experiment {Halloween activity for kids}
There’s something special about Halloween season. Kids will love this spooky witches brew Halloween activity. They won’t even realize they’re doing a science experiment at the same time.
Use this fun and easy activity as a STEM project for classroom or at home learning. Have it as an activity at a party. Or just use it for an afternoon of witch themed fun with your kids!
This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase after clicking one of my links I may earn a commission at no additional cost to you.
This bubbling cauldron is a perfect STEM activity for Halloween. Kids can experiment using different combinations of ingredients and different amounts to see what results they get.
This activity can get quite messy. You’ll want to put a baking pan underneath and/or do it outside, on a tile floor, or in the bathtub. Basically, somewhere you can easily wash away the mess when your kids are all done creating!
Witch potion making supplies
- 1/2 cup white vinegar (for each color)
- 1/4 to 1 cup baking soda
- Various colors of food coloring
- Witches cauldrons
Make sure you have extra supplies on hand. My daughter had a blast doing this project and wanted to do it again and again! We went through 2 bottles of vinegar before I finally called it a day.
How to make your bubbling witch’s cauldron
1 – Mix vinegar and food coloring in small cups (separate cup for each color)
2 – Pour baking soda into the cauldrons (or whatever container you want to use for the explosion/reaction). Start with about a teaspoon.
3 – Pour one color of vinegar over the baking soda and watch your witch potion brew!
4 – Stirring it a bit will create a bigger eruption.
You MUST mix these in an open container. If you mix them in a container with a lid they could explode the container.
Learning Opportunities
This activity is a great introduction to basic science. They can try lots of different things and see which works the best and creates the best witch potion.
Try different amounts of baking soda
How do you make a bigger eruption? Does more baking soda make a difference? Does how fast you poor in the vinegar make a difference? How about stirring?
Try other items
Let them try different substances to see if they’ll create a reaction. What happens if you replace baking soda with salt, sugar, coffee, etc.
Do not mix your vinegar with bleach or hydrogen peroxide (not that I think you’re likely to let your kids experiment with those.)
To be safe do a quick Google search for the items you want to mix with vinegar to ensure they won’t cause any safety issues.
You can also do the reverse and try pouring other liquids over the baking soda to see if they react. As before, make sure your combinations aren’t going to cause any issues.
Try making a rainbow
Try to make a rainbow potion. We achieved it a few times by dropping food coloring on the dry baking soda, 3-4 colors in different areas of the baking soda.
Then pour the vinegar over top and we actually saw the colors come out separately, it was cool to watch.
Have fun! We’d love to see your witch potions. Share a photo below or tag us on Instagram @totschoolresources

How To Make Witches And Wizards Brew- Halloween Science Experiment For Kids
Happy October 1st! All month long we are celebrating Halloween by conducting spooky science experiments, building creepy crafts, and more!
For today’s science experiment to kick off the month of October, we did a simple Witches/Wizards Brew. We normally talk about the reaction of baking soda and vinegar which creates carbon dioxide when combined, but today I decided to go a bit deeper and talk about color!
How Do We See Color?
We used several colors that exploded in the cauldrons when the chemical reaction occurred, and so my question to my boys were, “How do we see color?”
Here’s my simple explanation to them: When light hits an object, two things happen-1) the object absorbs some of the light and 2) the object reflects the rest of it. The reflected light goes to our eyes where the cone photoreceptors are, and this allows us to see the color of the object.
This of course prompted more questions such as “how do people who are blind see?”, “How do we see at night?”, “what about people who are colorblind?” So many great questions from this simple witches/wizards brew science experiment!
When you do this experiment with your kids, comment below with their questions! I would love to read what comes to their mind about how we see color.
Now on to our witches and wizards brew experiment…
- Baking Soda
- Food Coloring
- Measuring Spoons
- Measuring Cups
1- Put each cauldron side by side in a tray.
2- Add about 1 heaping tablespoon of baking soda to each cauldron.
3- Add in a few drops of food coloring on to the baking soda.
4- Add about 1/4 cup of vinegar into each of the cauldrons and watch the “potion brew and overflow!”
*Watch our video below to see how we did this experiment and also watch for what my kids call “an EPIC” version of this baking soda and vinegar experiment!

Witches’ Brew Fizzy Cauldrons: Halloween STEAM
Creating a witches’ brew experiment at home is one of those super easy kitchen science experiments, every child should experience especially during Halloween. When I set this up for my kids, they absolute loved it. Baking soda fizzy experiments are always a massive hit on our house. The colours, the smells, the sounds and the bubbles! This fun and easy chemical reaction was equal parts science and sensory!
Science for All Ages
One of the great things about this activity is that its safe for toddlers and preschoolers but exciting enough to entertain older grade school age kids as well! The main ingredients for this chemical reaction are baking soda and vinegar, common kitchen household items that is easily available at the grocery store.

Science Behind the Witches’ Brew Fizzy Cauldrons: Halloween STEAM Experiment
What happens when you combine baking soda with vinegar? Fizz ! But why does this happen with two seemingly common ingredients. Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When an acid and a base mix they produce a gas called carbon dioxide.
How to Make the Witches’ Brew Fizzy Cauldrons: Halloween STEAM Experiment
- Grab black plastic witches’ cauldrons. Find a link to purchase them in the supplies section below.
- Add some baking soda to the cauldrons. The exact measurements aren’t needed. Making it the perfect activity for toddlers and preschoolers. Invite them to spoon in the baking soda – 2-4 spoon fulls are good but more or less is ok too.
- Add several drops of green, purple, orange or black food colouring in each cauldrons, respectively, deepening on how many you have. To make the explosion larger and foamier, add few drops of bubble bath to the cauldrons as well. Again the exact measures aren’t needed. The more bubble bath you add the larger the reaction so be prepared!
- Fill a squeeze bottle with vinegar. You can mix in some water in order to make your vinegar go further. Mix 1/3 water with 2/3 vinegar.
- Squeeze the vinegar into the cauldrons and watch it erupt with green, orange purple or black bubbling brew! My kids loved this part!!
How the Played
My kids adored loved this idea (as they do with all the fizzy activities we do) they honestly can’t get enough! I let me kids add all of the ingredients so they added lots and lots of bubble bath. The result was a massive foamy bubbly brew erupting on our tray. They of course got their hands in there at the end of the experiment when all the vinegar was exhausted. Because every good witch knows sometimes you have to mix those ingredients by hand!

Witches brew Sensory Bin – An Awesome halloween science experiment for toddlers
Get into the Halloween spirit with this Witches Brew science experiment! For science week on our tot school program, we have been doing lots of science activities.
My two-year-old is obsessed and is loving every single one of these activities. This witches brew Halloween science experiment is an all-year-round favorite.
Both ingredients needed are affordable, and you can buy them in bulk so you can do this over and over again!
Supplies needed
- Baking Soda
- Food Coloring
- Small bottles
- Toy spiders
Setting up the Halloween science experiment
I like to create themes around our activities since it is Halloween well, the spiders, the monster eyeballs, and all things witches brew had to come out.
The cauldron was going to be the center of the activity. They needed to hold the baking soda, and the bottles were going to keep a mix of vinegar and water .
You can do just vinegar but learn from hosting this activity many times during sensory class; I knew the kids love to pour over and over again. The vinegar mixed with water will work the same, and it will last longer.
The scienCe experiment
When the vinegar and baking soda are mixed, there is a chemical reaction that occurs. It bubbles up, fizzes, and erupts like a small volcano. When adding food coloring to the water or the baking soda, the bubbles will turn that color.
Make it fun
I set up two trays; the first tray was the baking soda inside the cauldron and the spiders. The second tray was the tray with the liquids. I had different size containers and syringes to play with. I used food coloring to make a variation of colors for our mini eruptions.
What are they Learning

This activity, although simple to set up and using a few ingredients, offer the opportunity for a ton of learning.
They are learning cause and effect on how they have the power to pour the water/vinegar mixture and make the eruption happen.
They are practicing pouring skills. Pouring is a skill that I like to reinforce a lot. Controlling hand and arm movements to control what they are doing with their hands is just a small step that will translate into writing skills.
They are strengthening hand and finger muscles . When using the syringes ( or droppers is you don’t have syringes), they are squeezing and working all those little muscles in their hand. Perfect activity to strengthen those muscles that later on will hold a pencil.
How to clean up
This activity is simple to clean up. Just run some soap and water over your tray and supplies and done!
This Halloween science experiment was so much fun! He had a blast, and so did I! I think I had a little bit of Hocus Pocus in me that wanted to live my child’s favorite movie, lol
