PhD Position AI Alignment: Value-Based Assessment Methods for AI Systems
Challenge : Developing and operationalizing value-based assessment methods for AI systems.
Change : Driving validation of AI systems to ensure that only trustworthy models are used.
Impact : Enhancing police trustworthiness through AI alignment at the Dutch National Police.
Job description
AI alignment refers to the goal to make AI systems behave in line with human intentions and values. With the rapid proliferation of AI systems and their growing capability, there are equal risks from misalignment. Validating models is a crucial step before decisions can be made about implementation and is important for continuous monitoring of systems in use. The challenge is, however, that validation needs to happen along a range of different values that are important for AI to possess at the police: accuracy, but also fairness, reliability, trustworthiness, and more need to be ensured.
AI alignment refers to the goal of making AI systems behave in line with human intentions and values. With the rapid proliferation of AI systems and their growing capability, there are equal risks of misalignment. Validating models is crucial before decisions can be made about implementation and is important for continuous monitoring of systems in use. The challenge is, however, that validation needs to happen along a range of different values that are important for AI to possess at the police: accuracy, but also fairness, reliability, trustworthiness, and more need to be ensured.
As a PhD student at TU Delft, you will conduct impactful research on two key aspects in advancing the responsible use of AI within the Netherlands Police force. First, you will investigate the standards and values surrounding AI usage, particularly concerning openly available models to begin with. This entails defining what criteria these models must meet, beyond common considerations like bias and fairness. You will research which values AI systems need to be aligned with through in-depth case studies at the Netherlands Police. Second, you will also design methods to systematically evaluate various models against these established standards and values. This contribution ensures the responsible deployment of AI within the police force, pushes forward our understanding of how to align AI models in practice, and maximizes the efficiency of utilizing publicly available models.
Through these efforts, you will significantly contribute to advancing the important area of AI alignment and help foster an ethical and accountable AI culture within the organization.
Your project is part of the Model-Driven Decisions Lab, a Netherlands Police - TU Delft initiative, where you will join an interdisciplinary community of four fellow PhD students who have already been hired. Together, you will share knowledge to tackle AI-assisted decision-making from different perspectives. To foster close collaboration with the stakeholders and work on practical implementation, you will spend 20% of your time at the Netherlands Police’s strategy and innovation division. Given the ethical and moral facets of your research, you will also work closely with colleagues of the Delft Digital Ethics Centre at the Faculty of Technology, Policy, and Management (TPM). Your home base will be the Web Information Systems research group at the Computer Science faculty (EEMCS). As an internationally diverse team of driven academics and students, we cultivate a welcoming and collaborative environment. We will give you all the support and training you need to evolve both personally and professionally.
Learn more about your project at the Model-Driven Decisions Lab.
Job requirements
- You hold an MSc in computer science, data science, or another relevant subject such as ethics of AI, with practical machine learning/artificial intelligence courses and relevant project and thesis experience.

- You thrive on conducting research geared to real-world application in the security domain and are intrinsically motivated to collaborate with the Netherlands Police.
- You harness your communication skills to work with different scientific and nonscientific stakeholders in different work cultures.
Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three scientific disciplines. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we all use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make completely sustainable and future-proof. At the same time, we are developing the chips and sensors of the future, whilst also setting the foundations for the software technologies to run on this new generation of equipment – which of course includes AI. Meanwhile we are pushing the limits of applied mathematics, for example mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. In other words: there is plenty of room at the faculty for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1000 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.

Position Description
Job description, do you have a compelling and refreshing vision on statistical science – are you eager to move beyond traditional boundaries and conventional views, and lead the way in exploring emerging scientific challenges we are looking for a full professor in applied statistics with a broad disciplinary expertise, strong mathematical background, and natural drive for pursuing applications. the scientific direction of this full professor role is to develop statistical theory and data-analytic methods for the analysis of complex, large, and/or high-dimensional data sets. the focus of the research is to provide a more systemic view or a full breadth of all interrelationships of the collected data simultaneously, instead of determining inference or information on one specific feature of the data. specific topics of interest that would be related to these research goals include bayesian analysis, causal inference, data harmonization, distributed analysis, network analysis, predictive analytics, spatial statistics, statistical learning, and survival analysis. data collection techniques and design of complex studies, e.g., experimental design, nonprobability-based sampling, and surveys, are of interest as well. strong disciplinary expertise, a broad vision on applied and fundamental research in statistics (rooted in deep knowledge of the classical statistical methods and underpinnings, but also encompassing modern data-analytic techniques), and a keen eye towards applications are imperatives to achieve the above ambitions. it is further crucial to proactively connect with scientists in other disciplines who use and analyze data and to forge strong links with data-intensive sectors in industry and society, for example in the area of high-tech systems, health, smart mobility, consultancy services, and governmental agencies. key responsibilities of the position are: develop internationally leading research in the research area described above and actively publish in international high-impact journals. initiate, acquire and coordinate (multidisciplinary) research projects through external funding. strengthen connections and collaborations with other researchers and research programs within the mathematics & computer science (m&cs) department, tu/e, the netherlands, and abroad. actively develop a network with external partners which support the research and innovation in applied statistics both financially and content wise. actively contribute to the workshop program of eurandom. develop, teach, and coordinate courses for the bsc, msc, and phd education programs of the m&cs department as well as for the service education, and be responsible for renewing these courses. supervise bsc, msc, and phd students in mathematics and data science. perform managerial and/or administrative tasks for the stochastics, probability and operations research (spor) cluster, the mathematics domain, and the m&cs department. provide leadership to the professionals of the teaching and research institute for data science analytics (tri-dsa), activities and directions where appropriate. spor cluster the department of mathematics and computer science (m&cs) is organized in three different domains: mathematics, computer science, and data science. each domain consists of several clusters. the mathematics domain has three clusters: center for analysis, scientific computing and applications (casa), discrete mathematics (dm), and statistics, probability and operations research (spor). the spor cluster currently consists of four full professors, three associate professors, 14 assistant professors, six teachers, two part-time professors, and around 45 phd students and post-docs. spor focuses on four themes, namely statistics, probability, stochastic operations research, and combinatorial optimization. these themes are basic mathematical disciplines which form the foundations of many of the developments in modern fields such as machine learning, complex dynamic systems, data-driven decision support and optimization, and resilient network design. at a high level, researchers in spor explore the underlying mathematical structure and dynamics of large-scale complex systems, and develop effective methods to analyze and optimize them. these systems are invariably inspired by real-world applications. thus, spor has a double perspective: the research is aimed at advancing theoretical and methodological foundations, while at the same time spor maintains strong connections with society, industry and other scientific domains. see https://spor.win.tue.nl for further details. spor widely contributes to the education programs of m&cs in mathematics, computer science, and data science. spor also provides extensive service education to other departments at tu/e, and strongly contributes to mastermath, a joint educational program in which all dutch universities participate. teaching and research institute for data science analytics the teaching and research institute for data science analytics (tri-dsa) is closely connected to the spor cluster, and focuses on innovation, impact, and valorization of statistical and data-analytic methods. the statisticians of tri-dsa work with external customers on solutions for statistical data science challenges (e.g., performing data analyses, developing software, innovating methods) and provide professional education on statistical and data-analytic methods. tri-dsa offers a unique platform to pursue collaboration in statistical data science with professionals in the health domain (e.g., industry, hospitals, registries). the full professor is expected to provide leadership to the statisticians of tri-dsa by taking ownership of these opportunities, developing new initiatives, and contributing to long-term strategic goals on innovation and impact. see https://tri-dsa.win.tue.nl for further details., job requirements, enthusiastic and inspiring researcher and educator, with a phd in the area of statistics, or a comparable domain. sustained track record of high-quality academic research and international recognition and visibility, as evidenced by invited lectures at major conferences and renowned institutes. a strong mathematical background, deep understanding and appreciation for foundational research, and Werken bij de TU/e
Phd in photonic integrated circuits for quantum technology, functieomschrijving.
The Dutch-German InSynQ project aims to make integrated photonics ready for applications in quantum sensing and metrology. We will do this with a focus on indium phosphide (InP) based monolithic technology, operating around 1550 nm, i.e., the telecom wavelengths. The goal is to invent and develop novel low-noise and ultra-stable tunable lasers and very sensitive photodetectors. These will be integrated onto a photonic integrated circuit (PIC), so the quantum sensing systems can be miniaturized. Together with our German industry partner Menlo Systems, we will then make the technology ready to go into compact quantum clocks. Quantum everywhere, with PICs inside!
As a PhD student in our group, you will be responsible for realizing such novel PICs, with a focus on advanced wavelength-tunable lasers and balanced photodiodes. The work includes the design of novel lasers, typically making use of a mature (external) foundry platform, such as offered by our JePPIX partners ( https://www.jeppix.eu/ ). You will also be working in our cleanroom to design and fabricate extremely sensitive photodiodes, beyond the current capabilities of commercial foundries. Our NanoLabTUe cleanroom is a globally-leading facility for III-V fabrication (e.g., http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/0268-1242/29/8/083001 , https://www.tue.nl/en/research/research-groups/nanolabtue/nanolabtue ). These chips will finally be tested in our optical characterization labs.
The work in our group will be highly collaborative and complementary to the work done by our Partner in this project, Menlo Systems. The work at TU/e will focus on the PIC design and technology development. Since Eindhoven is located in the heart of the leading semiconductor and photonics ecosystem “Brainport” ( https://brainporteindhoven.com/en/ ), close collaboration with a wider range of academic and industrial partners can also be anticipated.
As a PhD student, you will be part of a dynamic and ambitious environment, with plenty of opportunities to develop yourself. Our Future Chips Flagship ( https://www.tue.nl/en/research/research-areas/future-chips ) at TU/e consists of many closely-cooperating research groups, focusing on integrated photonics, semiconductor technology and quantum technology. You will be part of the Photonic Integration group (PhI) at Electrical Engineering, which has about 70 members, 25 of which are PhD students. Our laboratory facilities are extensive and state of the art.
