A case study examining the influence of youth culture and college experience on student persistence among underserved African- American students, 2016

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how youth culture influences the attitudes and motivations of African-American junior college students who have aspirations to complete postsecondary credentials to advance their socioeconomic status but do not persist. In this study, youth culture was defined as the values, norms, and practices shared by African-American youth between the ages of 18-24, indicative of the way they chose to live life and make decisions. The independent variables were Academic Self-Concept, Student Educational Experience, College Bridge Programs, Academic Advisement, Faculty Involvement and Interaction, Extracurricular Activities, Youth Culture, Family Support, Socioeconomic Status, Black Media, and Social Media; the dependent variable was student persistence. The specific tradition of inquiry was the comparative case study approach because it dealt with the exploration of cases in a real life setting over time through detailed, in-depth data collection involving multiple sources of information. The researcher also utilized interpretive/theoretical frameworks to guide the study. The study took place at two public colleges within the University System of Georgia, one rural and the other urban. The participants included 12 students, 2 . academic advising directors, and 2 faculty members. The study consisted of three types of instrumentation-interviews, direct observations, and focus groups. To analyze data, the researcher interpreted and coded statements from the interviews and focus groups from which themes were developed. Significant statements were also clustered into defined themes. The results substantiated and expounded upon the relationships between the independent and dependent variables. Using the qualitative data collected, the researcher created an Analysis Matrix organized with the three data sources, 20 themes and 5 categories. The researcher found that youth enrolled in college have a strong desire to persist but encounter many internal and external pressures which make persistence to graduation challenging. Although colleges may be equipped with the tools and resources necessary to promote persistence, many are deemed inappropriate to the needs of African American students. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest unlike their majority counterparts, many of these students spend their first semester trying to untangle feelings of belonging and fitting into college culture.

Introduction In this project, we are assigned to read an article written about the local youth culture of Santa Fe and observe what we see, and form strategies to impact that culture. Just from my initial observation, the youth of Santa Fe are searching to find ways to express themselves and for their messages to be heard. The youth have chosen graffiti as their primary way to accomplish that goal. This is not ideal because graffiti is illegal and the teenagers can be prosecuted if caught. However, if the city made some changes, then this could be extremely beneficial in quelling the illegal graffiti and allowing the teenagers to create murals or appropriate artwork. Based on the article, the city is working to create legal walls that the youth could paint on, with no consequences. Culture in Santa Fe The youth culture in Santa Fe seems very tense. The teenagers are rebelling against authority and committing illegal acts of vandalism, in order to gain attention and feel validated. The author of the article speaks into the inner workings of the culture of Santa Fe. “The graffiti community is very much like a tribe, it’s very much a place where people could feel like they could speak.. lot of young people are drawn to underground youth cultures, looking for an attachment to culture, because that’s what’s been taken away from us, so we build new tribes.” This statement, made by Rose B Simpson, perfectly encaptures what life is like for the teenagers of Santa Fe. These teenagers are searching for community and to be a part of a culture that makes them feel like they are a part of something bigger themselves. The problem with this search for identity is that they are looking in all the wrong places for all the wrong things. They
Strategies for the Youth of Santa Fe The first strategy I would implement as a youth leader in the local church in Santa Fe is, that I would immerse myself in the local graffiti culture and learn how to paint. I would set up a wall on my personal property and allow students to paint on that wall. Using that I would start building bonds with teenagers and gradually start introducing concepts of the gospel to them and start just talking about it while we painted. If I could become proficient enough in painting I would incorporate the Bible into what I put on the wall. I would also feed the kids when they came to establish my home as a safe space. The second strategy I would implement is that I would encourage the city to establish legal walls so that the teenagers could contribute to the city’s already established art culture. Then I would encourage the church to contribute to one of these walls and set up a rotation of people from the church that would stay at the wall and minister to the kids. I would also then use that as a way to bring the teenagers into the church and set them up with the local body of believers and help them find their identity in Christ. I would also create a life group that revolved around seeking and finding your identity in Christ and throw in some art classes as well. The third strategy I would implement is that I would put together events at the church or at a park with food and games. I would also set up stations where they could do art in whatever style they wanted and maybe even make it into a competition with a winner. I would also make it a family-friendly event that families could come to as a unit and could hopefully hear the gospel and get plugged into a church.
