Call for Applications for MPhil and PhD Programmes 2022/2023 Academic Year
The Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) established under the World Bank Africa Centre of Excellence (ACE) for Development Impact Project and hosted by the Centre for Coastal Management, University of Cape Coast, Ghana, invites suitably qualified national, regional and international applicants into its MPhil and PhD degree programmes. The overarching goal of ACECoR is to support the technical capacity development of young African professionals to address issues of coastal degradation, as well as promote the sustainable utilization and management of marine and coastal assets within the sub-region. ACECoR will carry out education and research programs in collaboration with academic institutions and industries at the national, regional and international levels to ensure a multi- and interdisciplinary approach to addressing coastal degradation across the sub-region. The specific objectives of ACECoR are to:
- Enhance capabilities of young African scholars in the thematic areas of Coastal Geomorphology and Engineering, Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, Disaster Risk Management and Migration, Ecosystems and Biodiversity Science and Blue Economy, Governance and Social resilience.
- Provide demand-driven applied research data and innovation for relevant industries and sectors in the above themes.
- Develop regional data support systems on marine and coastal issues. Create multi-sectoral networks for marine and coastal for an integrated approach to resolving coastal degradation in West Africa.
- Provide career development for faculty through an international exchange programme and in-service training.

Applicants are to note that for the 2022/2023 academic year, the ACECoR scholarship will mainly focus on the new Blue Economy, Governance and Social Resilience programmes; very limited scholarships will be provided for the Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Oceanography and Limnology, and Fisheries Science programmes.

The primary focus of this programme ls for selected Chinese students to take full PhD study at UCC. If the selected Chinese students successfully complete the requirements of the designated PhD program at UCC and defend their dissertation at UCC, they will be conferred a degree by UCC.
Up to twelve scholarships will be supported per year.
The programme name, in English, will be the China Scholarship Council - University College Cork PhD programme.
CSC and UCC will support the following areas of study with priority: Arts & Humanities, Science, Engineer & Technology, Food Science, Business, Law, Health Sciences, Medicine and Dentistry . Students will be eligible to study disciplines in any of the above fields at UCC.
Candidates should be intending to pursue study/research in one of the priority academic areas identified by UCC and CSC. However, applicants to other study/research areas will also be considered subject to the availability of relevant programmes of study at UCC.
Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates will be citizens and permanent residents of the People's Republic of China at the time of application; Overseas Chinese students may be eligible for the awards subject to CSC policy at the time;
- Successful candidates must return to China upon completion of their studies and/or research;
- Candidates must hold an offer letter from UCC. They must therefore fulfill the relevant academic entry requirements set by UCC, including a high level of English language proficiency;
- Candidate should satisfy the selection criteria set out by CSC.
Application and selection process
- Candidates should directly apply for admission to UCC before the application deadline, 1 February 2025. Candidates should inform the UCC International Office by email if they wish to apply for the UCC /CSC joint scholarship and include their name in Chinese and English on the email.
- UCC will evaluate the candidates by mid March 2025. UCC will provide CSC and each qualified candidate with a copy of the offer letter. This offer letter should be unconditional in terms of academic performance and English language capability.
- After receiving the offer letter from UCC, candidates must also apply to CSC for funding by completing an application for funding and employer reference (forms are available online at http://apply.csc.edu.cn) by 30 March 2025.
- CSC will evaluate the candidates according to CSC requirements and priorities, and provide UCC with a final list of scholarship recipients and inform the successful candidates.
Terms and Conditions:
Current PhD students who commence their programme of study prior to receipt of the CSC scholarship will not be able to avail of this scholarship retrospectively. The scholarship will be applied to the student’s record from the date of approval. Successful applicants must pay tuition fees until they are awarded the CSC scholarship, should they decide to register for the PhD programme before the scholarship award is made.

C. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
General Requirement
Applicants must have a first degree from a recognized University or equivalent Institution in the intended field of specialization or a related discipline.
Applicants must ensure that names on their application documents matches with names on their Academic Certificates.
EDUCATION PROGRAMMES
i. Academic programme 1.1 – Degree holder with adequate knowledge in any field of study (ie. Science, Mathematics, etc) but do not have any educational background and are currently serving as pupil teachers (unprofessional teachers) in second cycle institutions.
ii. Academic programme 1.2(a) - 1st degree in B.Ed Social Studies or related programmes with Social Studies as major.
iii. Academic programme 1.2(b & g) - 1st degree in B.Ed Mathematics or related programme with Statistics and Quantitative techniques as one of subjects read.
iv. Academic programme 1.2(c) - 1st degree in Arts (B.Ed) or related programme with English as major.
v. Academic programme 1.2(d) – A Bachelor’s degree in Education (BEd) of any field of study.
vi. Academic programme 1.2(e) - 1st degree in B.Ed Psychology or other related programmes.
vii. Academic programme 1.2(f) - 1st degree in a B.Ed programme.
viii. Academic programme 1.2(h) - 1st degree in B.Ed Special Education, Educational Psychology or other related programme.
ix. Academic programme 1.2(i) - 1st degree holders with education background in any field of study.
x. Academic programmes 1.3(a-c) – These programmes are available for applicants who do not have any qualification in education programme and yet qualify for Academic programmes d, f & g .
xi. Academic programmes 1.4(a-d) - Applicants for the M.Phil programmes must have Second degree in relevant area education programme from a recognized University or equivalent institution in the intended field of specialization with a minimum CGPA of 2.5 .
ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES PROGRAMMES
i. Academic programme 2.1(a) – Applicants must have any of the following: B.A/B.SC/B.Ed degree from a recognized institution of higher learning or tertiary institution, with at least, a 2nd class lower division.
ii. Academic programme 2.2(a) - 1st degree with at least a 2nd class lower division in Social Sciences or Business (Applicants will have to pass an interview).
iii. Academic programmes 2.2(b, c & d) - 1st degree with a 2nd class division in Economics or related programmes with statistics or quantitative techniques as one of the subjects read.
BUSINESS PROGRAMMES
i. In the case of the MBA programmes , holders of final professional examinations certificate and membership of relevant professional bodies such as Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana(ICAG), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Chartered Institute of Banking (CIB); Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD); Chartered Institute of Taxation, Ghana (CITG); Chartered Institute of Marketing(CIM); The Chartered Institute of Insurance (CII): Chartered Institute of Human Resource and Development (CIHRD): Certified Public Accountants (CPA); Charted Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) can apply. For the MSc programmes (No. 3.3a-c), holders of professional qualifications such as CIPS, CIM, ICA, ACCA, CPA and CIMA can apply .
ii. Candidates applying for the MSc. in Procurement and Supply Chain Management programme should have a first degree or its equivalent from an accredited Institution in Procurement, Supply Chain Management, Logistics or Material Management. In addition, candidates applying for the MSc. Programmes must have, at least, three (3) years post qualification work experience.
iii. Applicants for the M.Com programmes must have an MBA in the relevant areas with a minimum CGPA of 2.5.
