What is a Good Persuasive Speech?

Before we get to the list, we must address the question on everyone’s minds: what is a persuasive speech, and what the heck makes for a good persuasive speech topic? A persuasive speech is a speech that aims to convince its listeners of a particular point of view . At the heart of each persuasive speech is a central conflict . Note: The persuasive speech stands in contrast to a simple informative speech, which is intended purely to convey information. (I.e., an informative speech topic might read: “The History of Making One’s Bed,” while a persuasive speech topic would be: “Why Making One’s Bed is a Waste of Time”—understand?)

And lest you think that persuasive speeches are simply assigned by your teachers as a particularly cruel form of torture, remember that practicing your oratory skills will benefit you in all areas of life—from job interviews, to business negotiations, to your future college career in public policy or international relations . Knowing how to use your voice to enact meaningful change is a valuable skill that can empower you to make a difference in the world.

Components of a Great Persuasive Speech Topic

The ideal persuasive speech topic will inspire the audience to action via both logical arguments and emotional appeals. As such, we can summarize the question “what makes a good persuasive speech topic?” by saying that the topic must possess the following qualities:

  • Timeliness and Relevance . Great persuasive speech topics grapple with a contemporary issue that is meaningful to the listener at hand. The topic might be a current news item, or it might be a long-standing social issue. In either case, the topic should be one with real-world implications.
  • Complexity . A fruitful persuasive speech topic will have many facets. Topics that are controversial, with some gray area, lend themselves to a high degree of critical thinking. They also offer the speaker an opportunity to consider and refute all counterarguments before making a compelling case for his or her own position.
  • Evidence . You want to be able to back up your argument with clear evidence from reputable sources (i.e., not your best friend or dog). The more evidence and data you can gather, the more sound your position will be. In addition, your audience will be more inclined to trust you.
  • Personal Connection. Do you feel passionately about the topic you’ve chosen? If not, it may be time to go back to the drawing board. This does not mean you have to support the side you choose; sometimes, arguing for the opposing side of what you personally believe can be an effective exercise in building empathy and perspective. Either way, though, the key is to select a topic that you care deeply about. Your passion will be infectious to the audience.

I’ve Chosen My Topic, Now What?

Once you’ve selected your topic, it’s time to get to work crafting your argument. Preparation for a persuasive speech or essay involves some key steps, which we’ve outlined for you below.

How to Create a Successful Persuasive Speech, Step by Step

  • Research your topic. Read widely and smartly. Stick to credible sources, such as peer-reviewed articles, published books, government reports, textbooks, and news articles. The right sources and data will be necessary to help you establish your authority. As you go, take notes on the details and nuances of your topic as well as potential counterarguments. Research the counterarguments, too.
  • Choose an angle. For example, if you chose the topic “Should we limit screen time for children?” your speech should come down firmly on one side of that debate. If your topic is frequently debated, such as abortion, capital punishment, gun control, social media, etc. try to find a niche angle or new research. For example, instead of “Should abortion be legal?” you might consider “Should you be able to order abortion pills online?” Another example: “Should the death penalty be banned?” might become “How long is it ethical for someone to stay on death row?” If you do some digging, even the most cliche topics have incredibly interesting and relatively unexplored sub-topics.
  • Create an outline. Your outline should include an introduction with a thesis statement, a body that uses evidence to elaborate and support your position while refuting any counterarguments, and a conclusion. The conclusion will both summarize the points made earlier and serve as your final chance to persuade your audience.
  • Write your speech. Use your outline to help you as well as the data you’ve collected. Remember: this is not dry writing; this writing has a point of view, and that point of view is yours . Accordingly, use anecdotes and examples to back up your argument. The essential components of this speech are logos (logic), ethos (credibility), and pathos (emotion) . The ideal speech will use all three of these functions to engage the audience.

How to Practice and Deliver a Persuasive Speech

  • Talk to yourself in the mirror, record yourself, and/or hold a practice speech for family or friends. If you’ll be using visual cues, a slide deck, or notecards, practice incorporating them seamlessly into your speech. You should practice until your speech feels very familiar, at least 5-10 times.
  • Practice body language. Are you making eye contact with your audience, or looking at the ground? Crossing your arms over your chest or walking back and forth across the room? Playing with your hair, cracking your knuckles, or picking at your clothes? Practicing what to do with your body, face, and hands will help you feel more confident on speech day.
  • Take it slow. It’s common to talk quickly while delivering a speech—most of us want to get it over with! However, your audience will be able to connect with you much more effectively if you speak at a moderate pace, breathe, and pause when appropriate.
  • Give yourself grace. How you recover from a mistake is much more important than the mistake itself. Typically, the best approach is to good-naturedly shrug off a blip and move on. 99% of the time, your audience won’t even notice!

Good Persuasive Speech Topics—Final Thoughts

The art of persuasive speaking is a tricky one, but the tips and tricks laid out here will help you craft a compelling argument that will sway even the most dubious audience to your side. Mastering this art takes both time and practice, so don’t fret if it doesn’t come to you right away. Remember to draw upon your sources, speak with authority, and have fun. Once you have the skill of persuasive speaking down, go out there and use your voice to impact change!

112 Persuasive Speech Topics That Are Actually Engaging

What’s covered:, how to pick an awesome persuasive speech topic, 112 engaging persuasive speech topics, tips for preparing your persuasive speech.

Writing a stellar persuasive speech requires a carefully crafted argument that will resonate with your audience to sway them to your side. This feat can be challenging to accomplish, but an engaging, thought-provoking speech topic is an excellent place to start.

When it comes time to select a topic for your persuasive speech, you may feel overwhelmed by all the options to choose from—or your brain may be drawing a completely blank slate. If you’re having trouble thinking of the perfect topic, don’t worry. We’re here to help!

In this post, we’re sharing how to choose the perfect persuasive speech topic and tips to prepare for your speech. Plus, you’ll find 112 persuasive speech topics that you can take directly from us or use as creative inspiration for your own ideas!

Choose Something You’re Passionate About

It’s much easier to write, research, and deliver a speech about a cause you care about. Even if it’s challenging to find a topic that completely sparks your interest, try to choose a topic that aligns with your passions.

However, keep in mind that not everyone has the same interests as you. Try to choose a general topic to grab the attention of the majority of your audience, but one that’s specific enough to keep them engaged.

For example, suppose you’re giving a persuasive speech about book censorship. In that case, it’s probably too niche to talk about why “To Kill a Mockingbird” shouldn’t be censored (even if it’s your favorite book), and it’s too broad to talk about media censorship in general.

Steer Clear of Cliches

Have you already heard a persuasive speech topic presented dozens of times? If so, it’s probably not an excellent choice for your speech—even if it’s an issue you’re incredibly passionate about.

Although polarizing topics like abortion and climate control are important to discuss, they aren’t great persuasive speech topics. Most people have already formed an opinion on these topics, which will either cause them to tune out or have a negative impression of your speech.

Instead, choose topics that are fresh, unique, and new. If your audience has never heard your idea presented before, they will be more open to your argument and engaged in your speech.

Have a Clear Side of Opposition

For a persuasive speech to be engaging, there must be a clear side of opposition. To help determine the arguability of your topic, ask yourself: “If I presented my viewpoint on this topic to a group of peers, would someone disagree with me?” If the answer is yes, then you’ve chosen a great topic!

Now that we’ve laid the groundwork for what it takes to choose a great persuasive speech topic, here are over one hundred options for you to choose from.

Something else that should be noted about good persuasive speech topics is that they are often more emotional. This is perfectly fine as long as you believe what you are arguing. The exception to this rule is if you are working on an assignment where your teacher or professor wants you to argue the side of the opposition. If that is the case, gather as much data as possible and center your argument on logos (logic) since the pathos (passion, empathy) won’t be there.

Listed below are a few good topics for persuasive speech engagements. By no means is this collection of persuasive speech topics exhausting, but it may give you a place to start or an idea from which you can base your own persuasive speech.

The Ultimate Struggle

Coming up with a solid persuasive speech topic or even a passable persuasive college admissions essay topic can be a struggle. This can be true even for straight-A students who may or may not have a penchant for argument.

Coming up with a topic is a whole different ball game than arguing a fact that comes up in daily conversation. Don’t fret – we have you covered in terms of good persuasive speech topics, where to find them, and where to even begin a successful argument.

Wondering Where You Should Begin? Read On.

Persuasive speech topics range from the minute to the monumental. There are several different routes you can take when deciding on a persuasive speech topic. Above all else, consider your audience and the message you are trying to convey. We will discuss this more later on in this article. For now, brainstorm a few ideas that you’d be willing to convince a room of stubborn people you’re right about.

Keep Your Personality in Mind as You Craft Your Argument

When choosing persuasive speech topics, you should also consider your own personality and beliefs. Think about what drives you, what grinds your gears, or what really gets under your skin. If your argument doesn’t feel like “you” then you won’t be able to convince anyone that you actually believe what you are saying.

This Should Be Something You Feel Strongly About

Remember that your persuasive speech is about a topic on which you are trying to convince your audience to change their mind. This shouldn’t be something you feel lukewarm about, and it certainly shouldn’t be something you are not willing to research.

Research is arguably the most important part of this process, and it isn’t something you should take lightly. Later, we’ll talk more about the research aspect of creating a good persuasive speech topic.

It’s Simple – Be Passionate

It is undoubtedly more difficult to come up with a solid persuasive argument if you aren’t passionate about something, and it can be nearly impossible to do so if you don’t believe in the cause at all. On the other hand, if you are passionate about something, it is likely that convincing someone you are right about it will come naturally.

Where to Look for Persuasive Speech Topics

Video: Persuasive Speaking: Basic Concepts

Good topics for persuasive speech events are abundant, you simply have to know where to start looking. If you can’t find anything that really catches your eye, don’t worry. We’ll give you a few ideas below. You can also look in today’s news headlines, in your history book, or for an opinion piece that you disagree with.

Just remember that no matter where you find your persuasive speech topic, you have to be prepared or nobody will take you seriously. Get out there and start looking (after you finish reading all of our exceptional hints, tips, and tricks relating to good persuasive speech topics, of course).

Keep in Mind that You Will Have to Provide Evidence

It should be noted that good persuasive speech topics should typically be well-researched and documented. Find evidence linked to them that you can use to craft a strong, solid argument. Hopefully, there are a few key points that you can focus on in your argument.

Knowing what those key points are will help you know where to start your research. If one point comes up sparse in the search engine, move on to the next. Eventually, you will find a key point or two that you can latch onto and use to craft a very compelling argument.

Consider Your Audience

As we mentioned before, when coming up with a good persuasive speech topic, you must consider your audience. Take into account your audience’s beliefs, demographics, and level of education. These factors all play a role in the way in which you craft your incredibly effective persuasive speech.

Facing a Heated Audience

If you know before walking into this that your audience feels heated and passionate about the topic, be prepared to face some degree of backlash. If this is the case, you will need to lean heavily on logic and reasoning in an attempt to dampen the emotions of your audience. With the right facts presented in a firm but friendly manner, you’ll be surprised at how effective your argument becomes.

Matching Your Audience's Education Level

It goes without saying that you may have a different level of education than those in your audience. This is unavoidable, but it does not mean that your message will be ignored. If your audience is more educated than you, learn the terminology, history, and semantics of your topic like the back of your hand. You need to be able to defend your argument and make sure that it sticks.

Simplify Your Message

On the other hand, if your audience has a lower level of education than you, simplify your argument a reasonable amount. At the same time, do not dumb it down. Simply explain it as though you were teaching your topic to a peer (because you are).

Remember that if you cannot explain something in simple terms, the odds are that you do not understand it well enough to be making an argument about it in the first place.

Constructing a Persuasive Speech That Holds Attention

Crafting a persuasive speech involves several key steps to ensure your message is clear, compelling, and impactful. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

  • Choose a Strong Topic: Start by selecting a topic you are passionate about and that resonates with your audience. A well-chosen topic will make your speech more engaging and persuasive.
  • Understand Your Audience: Research your audience’s interests, values, and beliefs. Knowing who you’re speaking to will help you tailor your message and arguments to their perspectives.
  • Conduct Thorough Research: Gather credible information and evidence to support your arguments. Use statistics, expert opinions, and real-life examples to build a strong case for your position.
  • Outline Your Speech: Organize your thoughts and structure your speech with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Begin with a hook to grab your audience’s attention, follow with your main points, and end with a powerful conclusion that reinforces your message.
  • Develop Compelling Arguments: Present your arguments logically and coherently. Use a mix of emotional appeals and logical reasoning to persuade your audience. Address potential counterarguments and refute them convincingly.
  • Practice Your Delivery: Rehearse your speech multiple times to become familiar with your material and improve your delivery. Pay attention to your tone, pace, and body language to ensure you come across as confident and engaging.
  • Seek Feedback: Share your speech with friends, family, or mentors and ask for constructive feedback. Use their input to refine your content and delivery.

The Power of a Well-Chosen Speech Topic

A great speech begins with a powerful topic. The connection between the speaker and the subject makes all the difference.

How Emotion Influences Audience Memory and Decision-Making

According to research published by Frontiers in Psychology , emotions play a significant role in how people process and remember information. Emotional content can boost memory recall, meaning that audiences are more likely to remember speeches that tap into their emotions.

  • Emotional engagement enhances retention.
  • Emotional arguments help drive action, making the audience more likely to respond.

Balancing Emotion and Logic

While emotion grabs attention, logos (logical appeal) ensures the argument is believable. Studies suggest that emotional speeches with factual support are more persuasive because they provide both emotional and rational reasons to act.

How to Structure a Persuasive Speech?

A well-structured speech ensures that your audience follows your argument easily.

Below is a proven format for persuasive speeches , combining emotional engagement with logical reasoning.

Introduction – Grabbing Attention

The introduction sets the tone for your speech. Opening with an emotional hook or a startling fact captures the audience’s attention from the start.

  • Example : Starting with a story about someone personally affected by the issue will immediately connect the audience to your topic.

Body – Presenting the Argument

In the body of your speech, alternate between emotional appeals and logical reasoning. This balance ensures that your audience is both emotionally engaged and convinced by the facts.

  • Example : After presenting a personal story, follow up with statistics that reinforce the seriousness of the issue.

Conclusion – Reinforcing the Message

End your speech with a strong emotional appeal that ties back to your main argument. Research shows that closing with emotion can leave a lasting impression, making your audience more likely to take action.

Effective Persuasive Speech Topic: What Is It?

A wide array of good persuasive speech topics is available for your next academic assignment. Furthermore, ensuring that your chosen topic aligns with the subject matter you are studying is vital.

Your speech can revolve around individuals (real or fictional), historical & cultural events, conspiracy theories, societal processes, human psychology, and much more.

But first, we must define common types of persuasive speech:

  • Factual Persuasive Speech relies on factual evidence to establish the veracity or falsehood of a statement or claim.
  • Value Persuasive Speech engages in arguments regarding a particular issue’s morality or ethical rightness.
  • Policy Persuasive Speech advocates for specific policies, electoral programs, laws, or similar matters.

However, before we can get to our list of persuasive essay topics for college , we want to give you an idea of what makes a particular topic good for your speech. Also, here are a few tips that can help you choose the best topic!

Aspects of a Good Persuasive Speech Topic

How to Choose Engaging Persuasive Speech Topics?

Finding a great persuasive speech topic can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. School assignment or a public presentation – it doesn’t matter. The key is to select a topic that resonates with you and your audience. Here’s how to come up with compelling ideas:

A successful persuasive speech connects with the audience on a personal level, especially when it covers entertainment topics that interest them. Think about what your listeners care about. Are they high school students, professionals, or the general public? Topics like mental health issues or whether schools should teach financial literacy can spark interest!

  • Choose Something You’re Passionate About.

Your enthusiasm will shine through when you care deeply about the topic. Whether it’s funny public speaking topics , space exploration, or climate change, selecting a subject you’re passionate about will make engaging with both the content and your listeners easier.

  • Find Current Issues.

The best persuasive speech topics often touch on timely matters. Explore American history paper topics or debates surrounding social media companies and their impact on free speech, minimum wage laws, or whether colleges should pay student-athletes. These modern dilemmas can lead to lively discussions.

  • Look for Controversy.

Topics that spark debate or controversy are often the most interesting. Consider hot-button issues like the death penalty, the role of performance-enhancing drugs in sports, whether the government should regulate social media, or the issues behind climate change. These topics naturally lead to a strong back-and-forth exchange of ideas, which makes for a compelling speech.

  • Focus on What Matters to You.

A good persuasive speech reflects your values. Consider subjects like mental health services, financial literacy, or social media companies that enact stricter privacy rules for children’s accounts. Your belief in the topic’s importance can help motivate others to care about it, too.

  • Consider the Broader Impact.

Some topics resonate because they have real-world implications. For example, discussing renewable energy or whether the government should provide free healthcare can influence people’s thoughts about important societal issues.

  • Explore Different Angles.

Sometimes, the best way to approach a common topic is to put a unique spin on it. Rather than simply teaching financial literacy in schools, you could focus on why cultural exchange programs should include financial education. Or, instead of a general discussion on sports culture, you could delve into how mental health issues are affected by the pressure on professional athletes.

Blend personal passion with audience interest, tap into current events or controversial topics. This way, you can develop excellent persuasive speech ideas that capture attention and inspire action!

Wondering Where You Should Begin?

Okay, we understand that starting a persuasive speech can feel daunting. However, the process becomes much easier with a clear plan. Here’s how to begin effectively:

  • Identify Your Ideal Topic: Choose an ideal persuasive speech topic that interests you and your audience. For example, you could discuss social media’s positive or negative impact on mental health or whether same-sex colleges are beneficial. Select a topic that offers room for debate and is relevant.
  • Define Your Key Points: Once you’ve selected a topic, outline the key points you want to make. For example, consider how social media companies affect privacy and free speech if discussing whether the government should regulate social media. Breaking down your argument into clear sections will help keep your speech organized and focused.
  • Craft a Strong Thesis: A good persuasive speech starts with a clear and strong thesis statement. This is where you state your position on the topic. If you’re arguing in favor of banning violent contact sports, your thesis might highlight the dangers to the body and brain function of athletes.
  • Do Your Research: You need solid evidence to back up your arguments. Do you debate over control stem cell research, the role of bilingual education programs, or whether colleges should pay student-athletes? In any case, gather data and credible sources to support each particular point you want to make.
  • Consider Counterarguments: A persuasive speech is most effective when it includes counterarguments. If you argue against canceling culture, anticipate opposing views and prepare responses.
  • Stay Relatable: If you’re talking to middle school students or a younger audience, choosing interesting persuasive speech topics like playing video games or self-driving cars can help keep them engaged. Adjust your tone and topic complexity to ensure your audience stays interested and can follow along easily.
  • Summarize the Takeaway: End your speech by summarizing your key points and reinforcing your thesis statement. Remind the audience of the importance of your argument, whether it’s supporting renewable energy, advocating for government-provided free healthcare, or debating the ethics of a health tax.

Tips for Preparing Your Persuasive Speech

“I understand how to start, but maybe there are some tips to make my speech outstanding”? Sure, there are! And we are happy to show them to you!

  • Focus on Structure. An organized speech is key to keeping your audience’s attention. Structure your talk by presenting the problem, offering solutions, and concluding with a strong call to action.
  • Use Real-Life Examples: Incorporate real-life stories or case studies to make your arguments more relatable. For example, when discussing cultural diversity, highlight how exchange student programs promote understanding across cultures.
  • Start with a Strong Hook: Grab your audience’s attention from the beginning with a compelling hook. This could be an interesting statistic, a thought-provoking question, or even a personal anecdote. A powerful opening sets the tone for your speech, piques curiosity, and encourages your audience to stay engaged throughout your presentation.
  • Engage Emotionally: Persuasion isn’t just about facts – it’s also about emotions. A compelling, persuasive speech appeals to both logic and the heart. When discussing sensitive topics like the ban on violent contact sports or mental health, connect emotionally with your audience by highlighting the personal impact these issues can have on individuals and society.
  • Use Engaging Visual Aids: Incorporating visual aids, such as slides, charts, or videos, can enhance the impact of your speech and help convey complex ideas more clearly. Visuals break the monotony of spoken words and reinforce key points, making them easier for your audience to remember. Just keep them simple and relevant so they complement your message without causing distractions.
  • Keep It Simple and Direct: When dealing with complex subjects like controlling stem cell research or regulating social media platforms, keep your language clear and straightforward. Avoid overwhelming your audience with jargon. A simple, direct approach makes your speech more accessible and allows your key messages to shine.
  • Practice, Practice, Practice: Rehearse your speech multiple times to ensure a smooth delivery. Practice in front of friends or record yourself to identify areas for improvement.

Constructing a Persuasive Speech That Holds Attention

Above, we talked about the structure. Are you wondering what the perfect structure for a speech is? Of course, we’ll tell you—that’s why we’re here!

Constructing a persuasive speech that holds attention requires a blend of creativity, strategy, and understanding of your audience’s needs.

As we mentioned before, choosing an effective persuasive speech topic means finding a subject that is relevant to your audience and engaging enough to spark discussion. Do you opt for easy topics like whether schools should teach sign language? Or maybe you are more passionate about thought-provoking issues, such as how the education system prepares students for the future. The goal is to start with a topic that captures attention immediately.

Once you have your topic, it’s crucial to weave compelling arguments throughout your speech. A persuasive speech includes carefully constructed arguments that balance emotion and logic. Suppose you’re discussing sports culture and its effect on mental health, for example. In that case, supporting your points with real-life examples or data related to professional athletes’ mental health struggles can create a lasting impact.

Similarly, tackling a modern issue like whether the government should regulate social media or the responsibility of social media companies to protect children’s social media accounts offers a chance to explore both the risks and benefits, keeping the audience invested in your argument.

Another effective strategy is incorporating current debates into your speech, such as whether colleges should pay student-athletes or use facial recognition technology in public spaces. These topics resonate because they’re part of everyday conversations and touch on issues that affect people’s lives directly. Highlighting the modern dilemmas surrounding these debates can make your speech more relatable and engaging.

Furthermore, using clear transitions between your points ensures your audience can follow your arguments easily. Whether you’re advocating for the government to provide free healthcare or proposing that society should ban violent contact sports for safety reasons, smooth transitions will keep your audience engaged and make your message more coherent.

Ultimately, the key to holding your audience’s attention is keeping the content relatable, using compelling arguments, and presenting a balance of facts, emotional appeal, and real-life examples. Whether you’re addressing the responsibilities of social media companies or discussing how facial recognition technology  might impact privacy, the right blend of storytelling and persuasive techniques can make your speech unforgettable.

150+ Good Persuasive Speech Topics for college Students

There are several different types of speeches, but the most common one is a persuasive speech. In order to be successful at persuading your listeners, it’s important that you know what makes people tick and how they react to certain stimuli. This means understanding things like their values, beliefs, thoughts about themselves, and more.

Persuasive speech meaning

What is a persuasive speech? A persuasive speech is a type of public speaking in which the speaker tries to convince their audience that they should believe or do something.

Persuasive speeches are delivered in many different types of situations, such as to persuade people to buy products, agree with an idea, join a cause, or change behavior. They are often used in business, education, politics and other fields where the audience might be persuaded to take some form of action.

Just like a persuading essay , A persuasive speech can be formal or informal and is usually 10-15 minutes long. The most important aspect of a persuasive speech is the introduction because it’s what hooks your audience and makes them want to listen for more. It can also make them not want to listen at all if it doesn’t grab their attention right away!

Persuasive speeches can be given after any event has happened in order so that those listening will make changes in their future actions with the new knowledge.

Persuasive Versus Informative Speech

Informative.

Informative speech is meant to provide knowledge or understanding about a subject.

This type of persuasive speech may include the history, use and regional variants of an object or topic among other things. For example, someone could give an informative speech on what it takes to become a nurse in order for their listeners to better understand this career path.

These speeches are used by speakers who want their audience members to adopt certain actions or beliefs—these types of speeches usually have three main points that are put forth as evidence; they may also contain anecdotes, statistics and facts which support the point being made.

Elements of a Good persuasive speech

A persuasive speech is one that strives to persuade the audience to change their beliefs or actions. Good persuasive speeches have a clear thesis, evidence, and logical reasoning.

There are three parts of a good persuasive speech:

  • introduction,
  • body paragraphs with supporting details
  • and conclusion.

The introduction should be brief but powerful enough to catch the attention of the audience members and entice them into listening for more.

The body paragraph should contain specific information about your point which you then back up with facts in order to strengthen your argument. Finally, the conclusion wraps up everything nicely by reiterating how what you said relates back to your original statement as well as reminding listeners of why they might want this new idea or opinion instead of what they already believe in Purdue OWL .

How to write a Persuasive speech

These are the steps to follow when writing a persuasive Speech:

  • The first thing you want to do before writing any text for a speech is come up with your main argument (also called the thesis statement ).
  • Next, you need to present evidence from external sources that supports this claim – use some kind of visual aid if possible!
  • Finally, we recommend adding a call-to-action at the end so people know what they should take away from it all.

Types of Persuasive speech

Argumentative speech topics.

A great persuasive topic is a controversial issue that sparks people’s interest. It can be any issues, like social media addiction or the legalization of marijuana.

  • The first step to writing an argumentative speech is selecting your side and making your point clear.
  • Next you will establish points on why your stance should prevail over others’.
  • Lastly, offer some rebuttals in case someone disagrees with you so they have something to consider when debating with you later on.

For example, if discussing whether or not marijuana should be legalized—a good point would be how it has been proven by researchers that cannabis (the plant) does not cause lung cancer while cigarettes do; another point would be how legalizing marijuana could lead to higher revenues for the government.

Moral Speech

This type of a persuasive speech is used to persuade an audience on what they should or shouldn’t do in order for themselves and others to be happy. You can establish your point by telling the story about how someone else may have been hurt if he/she didn’t follow that rule, showing statistics proving why it’s better not to drink alcohol while pregnant (or at all), or giving personal experiences about how you came across certain consequences from something you did but believe now was wrong.

For instance, let’s say I want my audience members to stop smoking cigarettes because it has been proven that this habit leads them down a path with many health problems; as such, their lifespan will decrease significantly—a good point would be to tell a story about how someone you knew quit smoking and saw his/her health improve.

Another good point could be to show statistics showing the vast number of people who have died from second-hand smoke, or discuss why it’s been proven that nicotine is as addicting as heroin!

The key here is to not get stuck on one particular approach: there are many different ways in which you can make your points. For example:

Point #1:  “ You should stop using plastic straws because they’re more harmful than originally thought .”

Point #2: “ If we want our planet (Earth) to stay healthy for future generations, we need to start doing things differently now — such as recycling old electronics like laptops instead of throwing them away .”

Point #3: “ Stop using plastic water bottles to avoid the negative consequences of drinking bottled water, such as pollution and a ton of waste! ”

Outline and Structure of A Persuasive speech

It needs a clear:

  • Introduction

Each point should have its own line within the paragraph to make it easy for listeners understand how you are building on top of one another throughout your talk – this will create unity!

  • A good persuasive speech will have a thesis statement that is supported by evidence.
  • You’ll want to include visual aids like graphs and charts where necessary too!
  • End with a call to action so people know what they should take away from it all!

Persuasive speeches can also be given as a form of protest or activism for example, someone could give a speech about how fast food chains like McDonalds are bad and should no longer exist because they don’t feed people healthy foods which will make them healthier in the long-term.

The speaker would then use facts to support this point such as statistics that show more people have diabetes than ever before due to unhealthy eating habits from places like McDonalds. They’d talk about how it is cheaper for these companies to offer prepared meals rather than fresh ones, and that there’s been an increase in obesity rates among children who eat at these types of chain restaurants every day instead of cooking themselves breakfast.

A speech like this would go into how the speaker is not against eating at restaurants or fast food chains, but that he wants people to have more options for when they eat out and stop going back to places with unhealthy principles. The person could say Mcdonalds was great because it helped fuel their love of technology in the 80’s, but now there are better alternatives such as Chipotle which offers a healthier menu option while still providing an enjoyable dining experience. Finally, arguments about why McDonalds should be banned from college campuses due to its bad reputation among health professionals may also be made.

The world feels divided on whether McDonalds has been good for our society or if they’re actually doing harm by continuing operations and marketing tactics. This topic is perfect for a persuasive speech since it allows the speaker to use personal experiences and opinions while still providing evidence from outside sources.

Persuasive Speech Examples

Sample 1: persuasive speech on global warming.

“ Global Warming is one of the most serious environmental problems we are facing these days. But do we really know what it means? Well, I don’t know if the world consists only of two kinds of people, those who took a look at its definition and understood everything they should know about it and those who didn’t take a look at its definition (and hence have no clue about…) but believe me – there are more than 2 kinds of people in this world! So I think the best way to approach is by showing you some facts. The rest will supply by itself.

What is Global Warming?

First of all, let’s talk about global warming…What does it mean? Well, the term might sound a little controversial. But don’t worry! As you will see, there is no real controversy involved in this issue – just a lot of confusion and misunderstandings. So let me dispel them for you…

In short words we are talking about “the gradual increase of the average temperature of Earth’s near-surface air and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming)

OK. The definition might be a little bit complicated, but don’t worry – I will make it clearer for you! One of the most important aspects is that we are talking about global warming, not just local one. That means it takes place on the whole planet Earth. ”

Sample 2: Persuasive Speech on Vaccinations

“ When it comes to vaccinations, there seems to be two extremes; those who think they are great and keep urging others to get them and those who think they can cause serious harm and discourage others from getting them at all. Of course, both groups are right to some extent. What do I mean? If you look at the matter from a purely logical perspective, then vaccinations work quite efficiently and there is little doubt that they are efficient in preventing diseases and keeping the population growth under control. But if you look at it from a rational perception, many people have complained about suffering from various side effects after getting vaccinations. And when such incidents happen repeatedly with different individuals, doubts start creeping in regarding their efficiency and safety. For instance, let us take a brief look at the measles vaccination campaign which took place on April 19th this year. It was an ambitious plan by our government aimed to provide protection against measles infection to all children under 5 years of across the country. The plan was aimed at providing a safe environment for children to grow up in without the fear of contracting the disease .”

Persuasive speech about women in politics

Thesis : Women have a right to be involved in politics just like men do!

“ Women have the ability to act, think and speak just like men do. That means that women should be given opportunities in politics because they are able to make a difference!

Many accomplished female politicians were overlooked for elections merely on account of their gender. This can’t continue happening if we want equal representation in government – everyone deserves the chance to serve their country! Moreover, when you look at history’s most successful leaders many of them happened to be females such as Angela Merkel who was named Time Magazine’s Person Of The Year 2015; or Indira Gandhi who became Prime Minister of India three times between 1966-1984 making her the first woman prime minister in the world.

These examples show how women are incredible leaders and should be given the chance to prove themselves in politics by 2020 when there will be elections for president of United States where females have been too slow on the rise: only 19% of members of Congress are female – this needs to change!

Many accomplished female politicians were overlooked for elections merely on account of their gender. This can’t continue happening if we want equal representation in government – everyone deserves the chance to serve their country! Moreover, when you look at history’s most successful leaders many of them happened to be females such as Angela Merkel who was named Time Magazine’s Person Of The Year 2015; or Indira Gandhi who became Prime Minister of India at the age of 34.

A recent study conducted by Gallup revealed that a majority of people believe the country would benefit from more women in leadership positions- now is our chance to do something about this problem! The United States needs more political equality than just females for president – 50% of all state legislature seats should be held by females which only stands at 28%. We need an equal representation before laws can truly represent the population and not just one gender group.

No matter what your opinions on feminism may be, it is undeniable that there are many strong female leaders in today’s society and we need to start listening to their voices !”

President Trump’s 2017 Presidential Address to Congress on February 28th

“I am here tonight to deliver a message of unity and strength, and it is a message deeply delivered from my heart.

“A new chapter of American Greatness is now beginning.” (Leading idea)

The first sentence in this passage sets the stage for what follows and reveals a message about unity and strength that Trump attempts to deliver throughout his speech. He starts by establishing “a new chapter of American Greatness”, which reiterates one major point he has been making since announcing his campaign—America will no longer be asked to do more than it can, but instead share responsibility with other countries from tackling problems like terrorism and climate change together. The next two sentences also serve as an introduction to the following content: I am here tonight…to deliver a message not just meant for you, but for the whole world”. This means Trump’s intention was to make his speech not just to the audience in attendance, but also for the whole world.

Once all of these introductory sentences have been read, Trump uses a thesis statement that has two points: “We cannot allow our nation to become a victim of economic sabotage” and “The U.S.” must take steps to protect its own national interests”. These are elements that he will build upon throughout his content. He then continues with an example on how America was being sabotaged economically by foreign countries—specifically Mexico which is sending us drugs, crime and rapists”, with another major point built off this sentence stating it’s time we get smart and stop them from ripping us apart while rebuilding American industry at the same time”. The next three paragraphs are spent elaborating on his point, and then he concludes the post with “We can’t let Mexico continue to send us drugs while it robs our country of jobs. We need a president who will defend America’s interests first.”
