No Homework Day – March 6, 2025

No Homework Day, celebrated on March 6, is a holiday that seeks to give students a break from homework assignments. Homework refers to a set of tasks assigned to students by their teachers to be completed outside the classroom. Common homework could include any of a variety of required reading, mathematical exercises to be completed, information to be reviewed before a test, or other skills to be practiced, depending on the discretion of the teacher involved. The issue of how effective homework assignments are has been debated over the years. In a general sense, homework does not particularly improve the academic performance of students.

History of No Homework Day

No Homework Day was created by couple Thomas and Ruth Roy as a means to help students focus on activities other than homework. It is expected that on this day, parents give their children a break from homework and that teachers at school equally take a break from giving homework.

Research has shown that homework can lead to stress, thereby being counterproductive to the learning process. Homework eats up children’s free time for other activities necessary for development, and its importance in learning is rather obscure. Professors at Duke University have suggested that the 10-minute rule should apply to homework.

The No Homework Day isn’t about removing homework completely from the picture, but it is meant for everyone involved to take a step back and relax. It is about giving children a break. No Homework Day encourages students to take a break from homework for a day and focus on other rewarding activities like sleeping, reading a good novel, creating art, playing a sport, or any other such activity.

Incorporate National Days into your homeschool routine to add excitement, bring smiles to your faces, and offer educational benefits.

And, honestly, if my kids and I have an opportunity to celebrate a day as fun (and delicious) as National Cheesesteak Day…well, we’re going to order ours “American wit extra.”

That’s “American cheese with extra fried onions” for those of you not fluent in South Jersey/Philadelphia terms wink, wink.

The truth is, we can’t.

But don’t worry about that! I’ve spent hours scouring the internet to bring you the best kid-friendly National Days to enjoy throughout March and beyond. I’ve compiled a convenient list and created free resources to help you celebrate all year round.

National Days to Celebrate in March Writing Prompts

Writing prompts often get a bad rap among homeschoolers, don’t they? Many folks see them as nothing more than busywork without much educational worth.

But I have a different take. When I create writing prompts , my goal is to spark kids’ creativity, help them dig deeper into topics, and actually make them look forward to their daily writing sessions.

Sure, I can’t promise every writing task will be thrilling, but I can say my boys are always excited about my themed writing prompts because they’re a lot of fun!

In March, I enjoy letting my kids explore writing prompts as the first task in our homeschool routine. Starting the day with something enjoyable, without the stress of right or wrong answers, really motivates them for the rest of their activities.

I’ve also put together a printable set with prompts for the entire month, making it super easy. I print them all out at once, and we’re good to go, turning it into a seamless activity for us.

The free National Days to Celebrate in March writing prompt set includes the following:

  • each page is dated by the month number date (ex. “March 1”), but not the day of the week, so this resource can be used for ANY calendar year.
  • just in case you come across a national day writing prompt that you’re not jiving with, there are 9 for backup! These are NOT dated, but are month specific
  • just in case you want to use for other lessons
  • a printable with all of the National Days to Celebrate in March that we’ve included as well as 9 National Month themes we’ve included (just want that printable? You can get this freebie towards the end of the article!)
  • plenty of space for doodles and personalization, there’s even a spot for your child/student to write their name to claim the writing prompt journal as their own

National Days to Celebrate in March Conversation Cards

I’m all about offering a mix of learning experiences whenever possible. When I was teaching , many of my students struggled with writing. Some found the act of writing tough, while others had trouble with different stages of the writing process.

What I realized is that just because a student can’t finish a writing prompt for whatever reason, it doesn’t have to exclude them from participating.

Inspired by this, I developed an alternative to the usual March writing prompts : National Days to Celebrate in March Conversation Cards !

These cards shift the focus from writing to talking, making them ideal for families who find writing challenging, don’t have access to writing tools (like when traveling for educational purposes !), or simply want to spark more conversations and make lasting memories.

Much like the March writing prompts , these conversation cards offer a prompt for each day of March and cover the nine National Month themes.

My kids will tell you: these conversation cards are a hit!
