The academic performance of university students depends on many factors. In order to understand the current situation and improve the success of university students, it is important to understand the factors that affect academic performance. In this respect, this study was conducted to investigate the factors that influence the academic performance of students studying at a state university in Kyrgyzstan. The study has a mixed structure that combines both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. Quantitative data were obtained from students through a survey and qualitative data were obtained from students through the implementation of interviews. According to the results, six factors had a significant impact on the academic achievement of university students. These factors are named as financial issues, university facilities, administrative facilities, dormitory facilities, health facilities, and social facilities. These factors show differences with respect to the demographic characteristics of students. In the context of this study, students also indicated their problems related to each of these factors.

Considering the increasing reports of high student failure rates as well dropout rates worldwide, this study sought to statistically determine what students perceive as the highly influential academic success and or failure factors. The hope was to uncover these factors so as to provide some direction in terms of intervention. A quantitative approach was followed in pursuing this. The population for the study consisted of second year students because they fit the context within which this study defines success and failure. The findings reveal a mix of factors some of which are consistent with previous research on student academic performance. This study derives its uniqueness from the perspective of the significance of the discipline-entrepreneurship, which has been touted as the major economic force that can deliver the necessary socioeconomic development to a country. The results of this study will not only add to the global literature on student academic performance, but will also provide those in management of higher education with the necessary material for intervening in issues of student academic performance. Further research might consider increasing the population size to gain much deeper insights into the perceptions. It may also help to undertake a different research methodology in the form of one-on-one interviews or focus group interviews.

Background. The prediction and explanation of academic performance and the investigation of the factors relating to the academic success and persistence of students are topics of utmost importance in higher education. Aims. The main aim of the present study is to develop and test a conceptual framework in a university context, where the effects of achievement goals, self-efficacy and class size on academic performance are hypothesized to be direct and indirect through study strategies. Sample. Participants were 553 students of different faculties from a university in Spain. Method. Pre-existing scales were used to develop the questionnaire. Questionnaires were group-administered in 21 classes during the first 2 weeks of May (i.e. about 1 month before the final examination). At the end of the academic year, students' grades were obtained from professors of each course. Results. Data were analysed through structural equation modelling. The results of the structural model provided support for most of the hypothesized relationships. Achievement goals and self-efficacy had no direct effects on performance, but results from the model comparison suggested that a mediational model provided a better fit to the data. Conclusions. Our study provides support for the key mediational role of study strategies in the effect of achievement goals and self-efficacy on academic performance. Self-efficacy seems to have the strongest indirect effect on performance. Mastery goals play a key role increasing deep processing and effort, and in turn affecting performance. Academic performance tends to diminish with increasing class size.

A number of factors have been identified in the research literature as being important for student success in university. However, the rather large body of literature contains few studies that have given students the opportunity to directly report what they believe contributes to their success as an undergraduate student. The primary purpose of this study is to explore students’ descriptions of the personal resources that they use to succeed while attempting to reach their goals as well as those personal characteristics or obstacles that keep them from reaching their goals. A review of 13 years of research into antecedents of university students' grade point average (GPA) scores generated the following: a comprehensive, conceptual map of known correlates of tertiary GPA; assessment of the magnitude of average, weighted correlations with GPA; and tests of multivariate models of GPA correlates within and across research domains. A systematic search of PsycINFO and Web of Knowledge databases between 1997 and 2010 identified 7,167 English-language articles yielding 241 data sets, which reported on 50 conceptually distinct correlates of GPA, including 3 demographic factors and 5 traditional measures of cognitive capacity or prior academic performance. In addition, 42 non-intellective constructs were identified from 5 conceptually overlapping but distinct research domains: (a) personality traits, (b) motivational factors, (c) self-regulatory learning strategies, (d) students' approaches to learning, and (e) psychosocial contextual influences. We retrieved 1,105 independent correlations and analyzed data using hypothesis-driven, random-effects meta-analyses. Significant average, weighted correlations were found for 41 of 50 measures. Univariate analyses revealed that demographic and psychosocial contextual factors generated, at best, small correlations with GPA. Medium-sized correlations were observed for high school GPA, SAT, ACT, and A level scores. Three non-intellective constructs also showed medium-sized correlations with GPA: academic self-efficacy, grade goal, and effort regulation. A large correlation was observed for performance self-efficacy, which was the strongest correlate (of 50 measures) followed by high school GPA, ACT, and grade goal. Implications for future research, student assessment, and intervention design are discussed.

Aims: This study aimed to investigate the factors that affect students' achievement. Study Design: Quantitative descriptive & qualitative designs were employed in this study. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted in Tafila Technical University (TTU), Jordan, during Feb – May 2015. Methodology: The sample of the study consisted of 488 students (219 males and 269 females). The researcher used two methods to collect data; a questionnaire was developed to collect quantitative data, it consisted of 5 sections; the first section includes items for demographic information (gender, academic year, college and students' accumulated average). The other 4 sections were the questionnaire domains; each domain represents the achievement problems from students perspectives related to that domain; domain1 represents achievement problems related to students (10 items), domain 2: problems related to the faculties (7 items), domain 3: Problems related to courses (9 items), domain 4 problems related to test administration (13 items). In order to collect a qualitative data about factors affecting students' achievement, the researcher used focus group discussion (FGD). Results: The results indicated that the following factors affect students' achievement: courses, test administration, students, and faculties. The results indicated also statistical significant differences 2 (P = .05) attributed to gender on the achievement problems associated with test administration, courses and faculties; female students had higher mean in problems associated with courses and test administration, while male students were suffering more from problems associated with faculties. Finally, there are statistically significant differences (P = .05) attributed to colleges on the achievement problems associated with students and faculties; humanity college students have more problems related to students domain, while scientific colleges students have more problems associated with faculty domain. Conclusion: This study is aimed to determine the key factors that influencing students' achievement, the study showed that students' achievement was affected by the factors identified by the researcher; faculties, courses, students and test administration. Students vary in the degree of the effect of these factors according to their gender and the college they study in. The student performance would be improved if the academic institution leaders minimize the influence of the proposed factors and taking care of the psychological factors that influence students' achievement by increasing the role of counseling centers at the universities, providing better environment for assessing students' achievement, faculties must be more fair in assessing their students, Faculties Development Centers at Jordanian universities may need to focus on developing the methods of assessment that used by faculties, and faculties and administrators should advise the students about the factors that affect their achievement and how to overcome these factors. The academic achievement of the students depends on many factors; only 4 of them have been identified by this study. There may be other factors which may have a direct effect on students' achievement, such as; the influence of socioeconomic factors, teacher-student ratio, students attendance in the class, and mother and father education. Based on the findings of this study and in order to generalize the results, the researcher suggests that research should be extended to all Jordanian universities.

Whilst the government, higher education authorities and institutions, academics, academic development practitioners, researchers etc. recognize that there is an increasing number and diversity of students accessing higher education, do the stakeholders really know who these students are before even thinking of enhancing their learning and teaching? Previous studies using large-scale correlational data have suggested that study behaviours play a significant role in influencing academic outcomes. This study adopts an alternative approach using a qualitative analysis of students’ retrospective comments to establish links between students’ reported study behaviours and their grades. Using survey responses and grades from 175 students enrolled in their first-year courses at a New Zealand university, a content analysis revealed both similarities and differences between the higher (grades above 75), middle (grades between 60 and 74), and lower (grades lower than 60) groups of students. All students, irrespective of their grades, identified the difficulty of adapting study behaviours to resolve time and information management issues. Academically successful students appear to possess a higher degree of achievement motivation, thus indirectly suggesting that conscientiousness and resilience may have been an underlying factor in their academic outcomes. The impact of attendance as a variable influencing academic performance will also be discussed.

The focus of this research is that student performance in intermediate examination is linked with students' outline consisted of his approach towards communication, learning facilities, proper guidance and family stress. The research is based on student profile developed on the bases of information and data collected through assessment from students of a group of private colleges.
